What a great experience. We also suffer from the Noisy Miner plague driving all the small birds out. We are currently enjoying the Butcherbird chicks though -one is obviously too small to be out of the nest so is hiding under an outdoor Jarrah table we have. The parents are feeding it as much as it can eat so it can fly to safety.

    Well done uncle Paul....
    I only have crow's in the top of that big gully gum in my back yard and I'm definitely not allowed on a ladder that high up;
I'd need Trevor's 600mm lens to get a good photo to show off...
    Cheers, Peter

Unfortunately, both Indian Mynahs and Currawongs are invaders (one native, one introduced) and both are destructive to small bird populations in Sydney. The Currawongs calls sound good, but if you do some research you will see how they eat the young of many other bird species. We humans alter the environment in a way that helps many destructive birds, from the native Noisy miners and Currawongs to introduced birds like the Mynahs. I was fascinated to find some time ago that bellbirds are actually a pest, helped by man, that destroy native forest. The natural environment is so complex and we understand so little of it and how we affect it.

    Apologies for the downer!

You are allowed to trap the Indian Mynah birds to help reduce there populations

A few developments over the last days:

They were getting bigger and starting to look like Willy Wagtails instead of a mouth on the end of a scrawny neck :

All was well apart from the obvious fact there was not much room in the home.

    Default Flown the coup

Then I was at work for a couple of days and at the end of that I walked into the shed and must have spooked them because I was aware of an exodus and when I looked up there was nothing in the nest.

I hunted around the shed and found a couple of them. One took off as I approached and I caught the other quite easily and returned it to the nest. As I released my hand it promptly flew off again.

I did find where a couple were:

I was resigned to the law of nature and they may survive.

    Default Reunited

So today I was pleasantly surprised to hear some familiar chirping at the back of one of the shipping containers. This is what I spotted in the tree:

and being fed by the parents still.

All good. Amazing how they collected them together again.

And I have my shed back too.

    Peter

I am not sure I contributed very much. It appears the Willy Wagtails are pretty committed parents.

After the chicks had left the nest but were still around in the shed the parents became agitated in the extreme. They would hover up to a meter in front of me chirping away like birds possessed. Then they would fly behind me and do the same except I would also hear their beaks snapping shut. It really is lucky they don't have much size. If they were the size of a wedge tailed eagle they would see off an elephant.

    Default At it Again

The wagtails came back. Three eggs again but only two babies hatched:

Parents are still not happy with me. The male charges me clacking all the way and the female waddles around on the ground with her legs tucked right up, as if injured, trying to lure me away. She did this last time too. I think I have the sexes around the right way but it is only a guess.: Macho for the male and subterfuge for the female .

    P1030051.JPGP1030053.JPGP1030056.JPG

What is certain is that they clearly feel they have more of a right to be there than me!
