Grandad's apprentice
Meet James (AKA Jim-Jams), Grandad's apprentice.
Here he is pictured using Grandad's Beefwood chisel handle blanks as building blocks. I think Beefwood is his favourite timber so far.
Whenever I am on babysitting duties all I have to do is put on a woodwork DVD and he will sit quietly and watch it for hours. His favourite DVD is Doug Stowe's Basic Box Making.
When he is in the shed his specialty is removing the locking knobs from the thicknesser.
At two years and three months old he is showing great potential, having already taken his first shavings with a block plane.
I hope he maintains his interest and spends a lot of time in Grandad's shed as he grows up.

Nothing like starting them early. As you say hopefully he'll want to keep it up as he gets older. At least birthday and Christmas presents won't be a problem to work out.
KrynTo grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

By watching the videos he might pick up something useful, even if he does not use it for twenty or more years.
Enjoy your time with him.

My son is just coming on two years old. The garage is attached to the house and so easy for him to follow me out there. He tends to use bits of dowels, fishing rods and some tools as hammers. I found him using my calipers as a hammer. I took this from him and explained that this is not a hammer, I gave him a stick to bang away. I put the calipers on a higher shelf but he still managed to get to them and hammer away.

My kids (31 and 27) reckon that Norm Abrams should be essential viewing for any one needing a nap. They don't know how great a teacher that Norm is.
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

The off cut boxes near your saws are a great source of goodies for little people.
