Default JK's Workshop Refurb Jan 17 and beyond...

    G'day all,

After lurking on here for a while and sharing some PMs / emails with members I've finally decided that my workshop and stuff is worthy of sharing.

We purchased a 3 acre property a few years ago - one of the big selling points was the 9m x 18m shed with a 6m high roof. Mmmmmm man cave on steroids!

After enjoying the shed for all manner of manly pursuits over the last 8 years or so I decided to get serious over the 2016/17 Christmas break and dedicate a good portion of it to my woodworking and make things a lot more purposeful and efficient in the process.

As it stands now the shed is roughly divided up as follows:

The 18m long dimension has 5 x 3.6m portal bays so it is divided up into 5ths.

1/5 is my wife's craft room with an attached bathroom. The craft room is a totally dust free and mostly noise free environment with a kitchen sink etc. Very handy for finishing projects too ). Happy wife, happy life and all that...

The next 2/5 and a bit is 95% dedicated to woodworking with with the ability to do the odd mechanical type job from time to time. I've recently lined the external walls with insulation and ply to keep the temps under control and route electrical, lighting and dust control around the workshop perimeter. All the wood machines except for the table saw are on the external walls. The table saw is central and uses the 1.2 x 2.4m main assembly bench as an outfeed table.

The next 1/5 is open space for whatever bigger thing I'm doing... assembly, servicing the car / mower / etc.

The last 1/5 is storage for camper trailer, garden equipment and motor vehicle / mechanical etc.

I also have two mezzanines - one full of crap that needs a good clear-out and the other is my timber store (above the craft room).

I have 10A / 15A and 3phase circuits too... fortunately for me the original owner/builder had big plans but never quite got there.

Here are some photos - I'll post up some more stuff about my machines and custom stuff as I go.

Just post up if there is anything of interest and I'll post up some more details.

    Cheers, JK

As a general rule I would say you can't have too much space for a workshop, but you are pushing the limits

What I wouldn't give for a space like that! Nice work mate, love seeing other people's shops. Definitely keen to see a run down on the machines you've got in use.

Thanks guys. I am a bit spoilt for space - but I use it all!

Here is a quick rundown of my wood machines as it is currently set up...

    • Scheppach oscillating spindle sander mounted on a restored & repurposed Ezycut combo machine base.
    • Hitachi 10" SCM Saw on a custom table (this thing is freakin awesome).
    • Makita 3601B fixed base router under an old home-brew router table - soon to be upgraded to a new shop built 1200 x 800 router table with Baladonea / Timbecon router lifter thanks to #Woodpixel
    • These are all fitted to the "Tyson" home-brew shop vac with Dust Deputy cyclone separator, 50mm DWVC line with my own design blast gates.
    • Ryobi 16mm bench drill (I have to put a thread about about the novel spring mechanism I made to replace the broken one )
    • Re-engineered Carbatech 4" 1Hp dust collector with Thein baffle separator - vented outside the workshop to eliminate filters / fine dust.
    • Laguna 14 Twelve bandsaw on custom caster base (inspired by the New Brit Workshop design)
    • 1962 vintage Ezycut table saw 9" blade mounted to a custom base with dust collection. This is setup for cross-cut sled / finger joint jig work.
    • Delta 12.5" thicknesser on custom timber base with casters.
    • Ezycut 4" jointer (buzzer as they call it :rolleyes ) on a custom extension base. This is setup with fixed infeed / outfeed tables calibrated for a non-adjustable 1mm cut. Also has in built dust collection and safety switch.
    • Durden lathe with custom 300mm sanding disk and table.
    • 8" bench grinder.
    • Laguna Fusion 10" table saw.
    • All the big machines are connected to the 4" system full time with blast gates etc.
    • Mr Windy 600mm shop fan (this thing is awesome).
    • 1960s model high school workshop dust extraction fan to keep the air circulating.
    • A healthy collection of battery and wired power tools.

Here are a couple of teaser shots of my restored machines and custom bases...

    Cheers, James
