Default Shed construction has begun !!!

The builder arrived today, and commenced construction of the shed. The side walls for the front section were all bolted together today, and the plan is to sheet them, then stand them up tomorrow. The builder told me to expect him on site at 6:45am tomorrow, and that he plans working Saturday as well. Everyone wants stuff finished pre-christmas (don't we all !!) so he's a busy man right now.

Some of the vertical cladding is yet to be ordered as they have to wait till the frame is assembled so they can measure it, but they assure me the stuff will only take 2 days to get, so not to stress about it (yeah, like that's easy to do....)

He's got to organise some sort of lifting thingy to get the roof sections on, because, with 3m wall height, and such a wide span (11.48m) they are just too heavy and awkward to do without mechanical assistance.
    Bring on tomorrow - I can't wait....

Things are really happening in your part of the world.
I have been following this build right from the start, and am enjoying the journey. Thanks for all the photos, hope everything more or less goes to plan.

    Hi Alan,

thanks for the feedback. I was beginning to wonder if anyone was even interested.
For many years I've taken a keen interest in other shed-building threads, so I'm presuming others will find this one interesting too.
    All feedback welcome.
Now that the shed build itself is underway things should progress pretty quickly. The budget's blown (read as, totally destroyed, gone, forgotten), the wife's fed up, and the shed is finally going up.

I'm aiming for a quiet christmas (where I'm sure all talk of sheds will be banned). )

It's going to be a great shed. Watching with interest.

    Cheers,

In other words, everything is progressing as expected.

Fun times ahead with the fitting out and finishing touches. Hope it all goes smoothly.

Default Shed Construction - day 2

The builder is concentrating on the front section of the shed first.
Today the guys fitted the insulation and cladding, and gutters, to the side walls, before standing , and then bolting, each as a single unit. If I was doing it, I'd have erected the walls and then clad them, but the builder has been erecting sheds for 25 years, and his offsider for 5 years. I wasn't about to tell them how to do their job!

They then used a Genie Lift to raise the roof span sections. Being 4.58m to the top at the centre, and using C200 channel, they were too heavy and awkward to lift manually. Once the first was up, they temporarily screwed some c-channel on a diagonal from that channel to the left side wall, then moved the Genie Lift to raise the middle truss. Once that was up, they bolted some z-purlin from the first to it, to give it just enough stability to move onto the front truss. Once that was up, they quickly screwed as many z-purlins in to stabilise the roof. It still needs cross bracing in the second bay, but apparently they do that from the inside once it's up, so I guess that's on tomorrows to-do list.

Everyone remarks how big it is. I jokingly suggest that I'm going to get a 'Bunnings' sticker made up and put it on the front. A mate reckons I should hold sausage sizzles every saturday. If I did, the proceeds would go back into the 'pay for this damn thing' fund.

The left hand wall needs a door frame still, but the builder says all the doors and windows happen last. Again, I'm the boss, but he's the expert, so I'll lend a hand where possible, and poke my nose in everywhere else
They quit after lunch once the temperature hit 37, and the steel got too hot to handle. Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter, so I don't know how much will get done then, but fingers crossed it doesn't get that hot, and more work can continue.

These pictures really give a good indication how big this shed actually is. You will have plenty of fun filling it up.

Nice looking shed! Mine is 12m x 9m and the pitch of the roof makes the centre ridge 5m high. So a comparable size. When it first went up it looked like a monstrosity, but now that we've nearly finished the external stuff and the landscaping of the courtyard next to it, it fits the space really well. We even had a comment the other day from the builder who is building the house at the back of ours that the shed looks terrific.

Default Shed Construction - day 3

Hi Bob, those dimensions sound very similar to mine. It's good to hear that it doesn't overwhelm the site. SWMBO was a little concerned when she got home last night and saw it. We do have some landscaping plans once the shed is complete (however budget blowouts mean they've had to be scaled back significantly). I'm not sure the shed will ever be described as 'settling into it's surroundings' but I reckon I'll settle into it quite nicely

The guys worked from 7am - 11:30am today. By the time they pulled up stumps the temps here were 38 degrees. The steel was just too hot to hold. Also, we couldn't order some of the flashings till this structural work was done, and once we'd measured that and he placed the order with the shed guy, he found out that today is the last day they take orders before christmas, so it is today, or January.... That meant we had to stop all work for a while and confirm there was nothing else missing (which of course there was). The builder is pretty cluey as far as sheds go, so I'm pretty confident that once he picks up this remaining stuff, we should have enough to get the structure done by mid next week. I'm back at work on Monday, so I'll have to leave him to his own devices (not preferable, but not much I can do about it).

The side walls for the rear section were erected today. The right one remaining unclad, as it is a continuation of the right hand wall, so the sheets need to span from the existing to the new. They will be done later. The left hand rear section wall was lined and stood up as a single unit.

There were a few dramas with the roof pitch lining up between the front span, and the smaller rear one. I guessed correctly that the front had sagged slightly, so we used a trolley jack to raise one of the posts temporarily screwed to the truss. Definitely not OH&S approved, but it got the front span up higher till we could drill through both trusses and bolt them together. (you can see it in pic #75). They then screwed the z-purlins to the roof trusses to link them all, and then a permanent vertical column was screwed in place and the jacked column removed.

I mentioned to the builder that the column now blocks where the haunch bracket has to go, for the 5degree lean-to bathroom section. So it looks like tomorrow we'll be returning the other temporary one, and jacking it back up again, whilst the permanent column is removed to fit the haunch bracket. Just more fun and games.

    Default Shed Construction - days 4 - 7

I haven't posted any updates for a few days as the builder was on a go-slow and progress wasn't great. He's now complaining that the job is taking too long and he's got other jobs to get to. I figure if he wants to keep knocking off work at 1:30PM every day, he can't really blame anyone else for it taking so long.

Almost every day there's something else missing from the order that he has to pick up before coming to site, and whilst it's been a bit irritating it hasn't been too big a drama.

He's are expecting to finish tomorrow. All that is left is to clad the front wall, put in the roller doors and tracks, cut in the window, and door frames, then trim pieces. Also the apex and knee braces. If he can push past lunchtime for a change he might actually get it done tomorrow.

All the cladding has been cut with a nibbler, and there are 1000's of little metal shards all over the concrete, and in the guttering, and roof ridge lines, so this weekend will be clean-up time.

    ¿Que? I'm pretty sure that's a contradiction in terms.......

If he's an experienced shed builder (like, of more than one metal shed build) then he would be well aware that even on a day of around 28° the metal would be too hot to handle by lunchtime, and should therefore have factored this in. He should also have factored in that at this time of year temps of 30+ in Sydney are quite common.

Furthermore, he's complaining that he has other jobs to get to - well, he keeps on knocking off your job early, so why can't he go and do some work on them then????

Sounds like his logic circuit is busted beyond repair.

In any case, that is one very impressive looking shed!

Gday TN. Impressive to say the least. Re stuff gone missing - the pooch (pic 7) looks like he/she been squirreling bits away.
