They didn't want a driveway/entrance that close to the boundary because they reckon it obstructs your view of the street and hence you may not see pedestrians that are walking past. The block wall has the same desired effect!

I certainly don't want to brag but in MY OPINION my local council is the best. It will soon be amalgamated with other councils and this will make it even better.

Managed to get a few more hours in the shed the last couple of days. Coined a new saying, a few studs short of a wall!

So I managed to install the new windows I bought, so much more light, and bit more airflow. I have also managed to almost finish the last of the framing for the insulation. I was 2 studs short of completing it all, and the ute is full of rubbish so I need to go dump that first.

A couple more pics. The walls under the mezzanine are all load bearing (or will be once completed). Wall sheeting is the cheapest ply I could find, its cheaper than using Masonite. I was going to paint it but I like the look of the raw timber now.


Insulation is R3.5. Hopefully it absorbs some noise as well.


Its getting close to being usable now! Once that back wall is done, I can start working out how I am going to position my machines. Once they are in place I can then build a couple of workbenches and start doing some real woodworking!

It is better to have as much natural light as possible. I would imagine that it has improved quite a bit after those windows.

Just got one more sheet to install on the wall, then I can start organising my machines and finally get around to building that new workbench I planned to do 2 years ago!!

Been tied up with work thought lately, I was semi-retired but a couple of decent contracts have come up that are too good to knock back. So unfortunately I will be back in the land of the working class very soon. Not sure how long that will go on for, but I suspect the best part of 2-3 years all going well.

Currently in Tassie, been impressed by the timber and woodworking talents down here, it's making me super keen to get back and get everything sorted ASAP, so stay tuned. Should be some results in the next few weeks!

Ok, so I said some updates coming. Progress has been slow, but paying work has to take preference. Had a quiet week this week, so managed to get some more work done.

So the shed is almost fully lined now. Things are still disorganised though. I built the last of the shelving I scored from my previous neighbour (the nice one, not the nasty one), and have just picked up all the stuff off the floor. So the next step is to get some benches made so I can start building stuff to help me get things organised. Note there is also some stuff in the shed that is from the house (such as the wine fridge), as I am still renovating! So as more stuff gets completed in the house I will find more room in the shed!

The lighting is all LED strip bought of ebay. Its 5630 leds. I plan to install more under the mezzanine bearers, as well as on the roof area. Currently using a mix of cool and warm. I opted for LED because eventually I think I will be able to convert a lot of the house and shed to low voltage lighting suitable for powering of solar. I reckon the cost of battery storage will decrease enough to make it economical in the next 10 years, so I might as well start the process now. The LED's are also much cheaper than Flouro's when sourced directly from china, and I think they provide a better spread of light. I have had some running in my other storage area under the house for about 3 years now and they are still going strong, so hopefully time will tell that I made the correct decision.

The table (panel) saw in the photo is a bit big for the shed, so I have decided to sell it. I am going to replace it with a felder B3 combo spindle moulder. The fence is shagged on it, but I had a mate who is a fabricator look at it yesterday. I maintain the waterjet cutter at his work for nix, so his boss is going to draw up and cut a new part for me! Handy having mates like that! The felder is going to be on back order till Feb next year, so I would like to have the saw running in the mean time as I really need it for some of the reno jobs.



The area that is not sheeted in the next photo will become another small mezzanine (probably more a shelf than a mezzanine). I am in 2 minds about it though at the moment, because there is a carport on the other size, and I could put a ceiling in that and I would have an excellent storage are for longer pieces of timber. Going to get my wifes cousin who is a builder to come take a look and see if its possible to do structually. If I do it, the colourbond sheeting will be removed to about 150mm below the truss.





And a shot from the street. I had a couple of people up the street complain that it was ugly, so hopefully now they approve! The woman over the road commented on how good it was looking yesterday, so I must be doing something right!




Next step is some benches and some power points. Going to use forum member coffenup's idea for that. Hoping to do the power points next week. (reminds me, need to order the sockets now!)

Plants are coming. There is some garden beds between the shed and the driveway. I might even add a small garden bed in front of the fence yet.

This is actually the rear entrance to the house, so I am not overly concerned about how it looks, provided its neat and tidy.

You certainly would need quite a bit more light when working in the shed after dark. I am not sure on what your neighbour thinks about this being ugly it is after all a shed. Maybe the street you live on has an incredible amount of trees and flowers lining the street.
