    Default Storage in the Shed

Just recently I had a little dilemma of storage space. Now while I know this beast is not a stranger to many of you, my problem is slightly different in that I do have the space. The problem is that my work area is remote from my tool storage area! I have an unsophisticated work shed, which some have rather unkindly described as entirely in keeping with the vintage hand saws I collect: Well OK, it is primitive with three timber walls, the fourth wall being al fresco: Another euphemism.

It is not conducive to storing tools and the majority I keep in a shipping container that has tools down one side and a collection of timbers down the other. It is about a twenty meter walk for almost any tool I require. This is not insurmountable and in fact it provides a degree of exercise if I was looking for some small justification. Which I am not! I came upon a partial solution recently that is extremely cheap!

I tell a lie. No, it is extremely cheap, but it was not really my idea and I am indebted to Forum member Simplicity for showing me this concept. I have merely snaffled it for myself and run with it.

So this thread is dedicated to Matt.

It very simply involves running a second batten along an existing purlin or girt on you shed wall so tools can be slotted in. My shed is all timber but the idea could easily be incorporated into a steel shed too.

This was the first beam I put up to hold some hammers:

    P1050082 (Medium).JPG

This is the only room left on the rack:

    P1050083 (Medium).JPG

So I decided it worked so well, was so easy and so cheap, that I made up another one. It is held by five 125mm batten screws

    P1050075 (Medium).JPG

    A better view from above:

    P1050077 (Medium).JPG

I realised that the slot to poke tool handles into was a bit large for some items so a simple piece of 25mm stock added to the inside solved that problem:

    P1050078 (Medium).JPG

    This is a better shot:

    P1050079 (Medium).JPG

Previously the holdfasts were on the batten screws you can see two pix above and the beautifully crafted marking gauges made by Ian Wilkie were stored a short bus ride away in a shipping container . There was really only the space left you can see in shot three pix above. It didn't take long to find something else to fill that gap (It does free up some more batten screws and wall space ) :

Now if you think this thread reeks of plagiarism, which of course it does, then you may wish to go to the original concept that Matt posted (#22)

    Ball Pein Ecstasy

You may also be thinking that there is a timber slat missing off the wall in the pix above and you would be quite right again. I have been meaning to get to that, but when the reader is made aware that the rain rarely if ever comes in from that side, that the back door is always open, that the side door isn't there at all and the "window" on the other side is just a hole in the wall where somebody before me had good intentions, you may think that I should first turn my attention to the Western wall, which does not exist at all. If you thought that, you would be right on the money as that is where the few rainstorms we enjoy each and every other year come cascading in with a vengeance to rival an Indonesian tsunamis.

Thanks again Matt. ( I had to say that as I have heard that the Victorian mafiosi have discovered sat. nav. and like Australia Post may find out where I live.)

    Thanks Kryn

That is probably one of the more complimentary remarks that have been made about my shed.

    Hi Paul.

You can’t have Ian’s fine marking gauges getting dusty like that!
May I suggest that; since you don’t really need your shed lining boards anyway, you rip a few more off, mill them up, and knock yourself up a tool chest.[emoji16] You could enter it into the next pallet challenge then too!

Best regards to you my friend.

Isn't the missing board deliberate, ie so's you can reach in from outside and grab something handy?

I rather expected somebody to remark on the sacrilegious storage of such fine tools and you do have a point. For the moment I am using them with a frequency that doesn't allow the dust to settle. With regard to the boards, they tend to fall off by themselves so I won't have to rip too many off. The problem with a tool chest is that there is nowhere to put it apart from in my shipping container that is a short bus ride away!

Ps. So good to hear from you. You have been sorely missed.

    That is almost true.

I have a small shelf up high (if you can call a shed that has a height of about 2100mm high) just next to the missing board where I keep what Philip Adams calls a wireless. To receive a passable reception I poke the aerial out the gap.

    P1050098 (Medium).JPGP1050099 (Medium).JPG

I do occasionally replace a board or two and you can see more evidence of the wireless receptor.

The pile of sawdust just inside the door is where I punctured one of the dust bags when putting up the first of the Simplicity style tool racks (not quite sure what to call them other than extremely useful). I didn't realise what I had done until the evidence presented itself. I plan to bag it up together with the shavings from the bags proper and offer it up to the town. As this is radiata pine and the shavings are long it would be ideal for small children with pets such as hamsters, guinea pigs and mice. We don't permit rabbits up here .

That's funny, I never pictured you as the sort of bloke to drive a short bus.

As for the almost-fullness of the rack, you can always make another one - but of course then you'll have to build the 4th wall first.

You are quite right. I was intending to be a passenger .

As for more racks, you are right there too. There isn't another spot that isn't already fully occupied or otherwise obscured .

    Paul,
I’ve only just found this most excellent and extremely fantastic all inspiring thread.
Seriously I think after all the years I’ve been roaming here.
It’s the best one by country kilometre
I’m not sure if I’m being slightly biased here tho,
Could also slightly be just inflating my own ego just slightly.

Considering I think you have named the thread in my honour.
    I’m touched beyond belief.

O an Ye by the way nice couple of pieces of wood,

    Cheers Matt,[emoji849][emoji849][emoji1782]

    Matt

The timber is old cypress pine from a house that some acquaintances demolished in the area. There was a huge pile of timber and I went along one day with the ute and the big trailer and returned with another load that NCArcher would claim was horribly overloaded.

I rounded over the corners on the first beam, but I was so excited with the prospect of even more readily accessible storage that I forgot to do that with the second rack. I think it will be there for posterity and in another hundred years somebody will say how odd it is that they don't match. there again I think I may have given many reasons for them to say "how odd!"

I quite understand your reasoning behind the status of this thread and I was confident I would receive at least one "like."
