Default TOOL storage beyond Peg Board’s!!!!!

I’m in the process of re arranging or re organising my Den of iniquity(Workshop [emoji849]).

    (Central wall is being removed)
In its previous orientation tools were hung on Peg boards or placed on shelves, shelves being either above Work benches or under work benches,

But I’m a bit Over the look of Peg board, I know it is practical, it’s easier too move tools about an re arrange them when new arrivals inferably happen, through know actions of my own of course,!!

Draws of some sort or other would seem the logical next step, except my memory is similar too a sieve that has had the bottom rusted out, ie it’s not good [emoji4], yes I could use our labelling machine an make it run Red hot labelling every bloody draw with this an that,
Saying that I’m not a hundred percent against draws, i still have an use my mechanics chest regularly with its draws,
An plan on getting another one or two for my metal working gear.

But just wondering what others use for storing your tools an bits an bob’s extra, one note point I like things resemble organised I Hate with a Huge H spending more than five minutes looking for something I to not enjoy spending two hours looking for a tool,[emoji35][emoji35].

Hence why Peg boards did work for me in the past, an actual still do work, it’s just they look blammmmmmm.

I’m trying too build a harmonious workshop ye I know that sounds a bit Wan……..

So I’m after some inspiration, Mr Studleys tool chest would be nice, but I think I have too work up too that one.

Ps I have a few Hand tools [emoji849][emoji849][emoji849][emoji849]
Please help my poor twisted soul.

    Cheers Matt.

    Default Make a toolchest!

    How about one of these?

    IMG_0417.jpg IMG_0418.jpg IMG_0419.jpg IMG_0420.jpg IMG_0421.jpg IMG_0422.jpg

It’s my interpretation of Christopher Schwarz’s Anarchists Toolchest seen HERE in an old Popular Woodworking article. The major deviation for me was the raised panel lid which is flush rather than the frame and panel example; this allows me to use the lid as a light duty work surface for sawing or shooting.

Since these pics were taken the contents of the sliding tills have expanded somewhat and I’ve added a removable saw till. The next feature it will have will be a big drop in tool caddy that hooks on the inside front edge by French cleats; and can be hung on the outside back wall of the chest; again with cleats. This will hold things like bench hooks, a brace, box of chisels, shooting and sticking boards etc.

Fairly cheaply made during the Covid period using some pine Gluelam panels and what Bunnings laughingly refers to as “marine” ply. Spray painted in watered down black poster paint… and the more observant will notice when I did the lid I took absolutely no thought to preventing overspray At some point I’ll paint the inside white…

    Chieff,

Very nice Tool chest, um but no. It’s just me I know there popular, but there just not me,
I still like tools up on walls, just not on walls covered in peg boards.[emoji849]

    Hi Matt,

I'll follow your journey with interest Like you, I use pegboards - mine are the metal ones but I think I prefer the hardboard ones like yours as they are not so noisy.

I like having the tools I use most frequently where I can access them quickly and my shed is dry so they're not too exposed to rust. I don't have any alternative suggestions myself other than using architects plan drawers which are quite shallow so you can find stuff quickly.

The best thing I did with my pegboards was to be ruthless in removing all the excess tools. I don't need multiples of the same thing on the board so I keep a couple there and put the rest in a drawer.

Something I find with the metal pegboards is that the tool holders seem too come lose and fall out a bit. I've found that a dab of hot melt glue stops this from happening.

Good luck and I look forward to reading what the forum members come up with!

    Regards,

    Brian

I love my French cleat wall. It's fun making all the tool holders as well.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I know you want to do wall storage but I’ll put this up anyway because it gives you a lot of storage quickly, although not a very romantic notion to the hardcore woodworker. These map drawers come up regularly often for a very good price. Mine stores tools that I use frequently in the top drawers and veneers in lower drawers along with boxes of box making hardware. So much space! And full extension runners IMG_0332.jpg

    Mic,
I do want mainly wall storage, but I’m certainly open too other suggestions, I can certainly see the benefit of a couple of old Map draw chests, i keep an eye out for them.

    Cheers Matt.

This is what I was thinking to add on the peg board of a workbench I picked up recently

Had a few screws left over from some computer equipment rack installs and the fit the peg holes perfectly, this workbench is on wheels so getting behind to add a starting cleat or 4 is trivial. Some tool holders to move around will prove very useful after my battery charging is organised

    Cheers

    Good luck, Matt.

As practice for a total kitchen rebuild, I made a 16-drawer storage unit for my shed about 15 years ago - roughly 2400 x 1200 x 600. The intention was that most tools and fittings would be stored there.

Now, the drawers are well occupied, and the peg board is still full.

I have the Pinnacle branded metal ones from Bunnings. I like them.

I have solved the problem with the hooks falling out with a clip I 3D print. I have attached the STL file I use in the attached zip archive.

I recommend using PETG or ABS. PLA just gets brittle and breaks.

Wish I had thought about putting chargers on the peg board, Delbs. Bench space is far too valuable to be their permanent home.

I'd also mount that powerboard vertically - either on the rear wall or on the side of the overhead cabinet - same reason, and helps to keep the cords coralled.

An even simpler solution, Mark, is not to buy crap hooks.
