    Default Win some, lose some...

So, we're in the process of moving house, out to the middle of bumblefluck nowhere and with a big new shed. Woohoo! No more moving several piles from bench/machine-top to bench/machine-top every time I want to change tooling. Or so I thought.

As we're currently living in a semi-furnished we'll have no major furniture items at the new place. Apart from white goods, of course! I've been planning for this over the last few years and have a good sized stockpile of PNG Rosewood, Qld Mahogany, Tas Blackwood and pine/Amer. Oak for carcasses.

    Sounds good, right?

Except I overlooked two minor details...

    1. My jointer/thicknesser siezed from the damp at the old place and I've been... 'dropping in for a cuppa & chin-wag' with my old workmates from the Joinery I last worked at any time I really needed any large scale pieces jointed/thicknessed/sanded. Which'd be fine except we've moved a further 2 hours away and I'm not gonna drive 4 hours each way just to machine timber!

    2. Ummm... new shed. NO benches, storage, timber racks or anything I can use as such in a pinch. At the mo half the shed floor is covered in assorted moving boxes containing tools, fittings and sundry shed paraphernalia. I have stockpiled a lot of misc rough-sawn KDHW to build this stuff from, however... refer detail 1.

So as I see it my no. 1 priority should be to buy another thicky and jointer. I imagine that by the time that happens SWMBO will be a tad disgruntled with nowhere to plonk her butt or store her clothes so no. 2 priority will be to cobble together a temporary workshop from rough-sawn to let me clear enough floor space to enabe me to at least make a token start on the house furnishings.

It looks like it's gonna be a while before I actually get to make myself the workbenches I'd first envisaged on seeing all that lovely floor space in the new shed. One day...

Oh well, in the meantime I can move the machines around to work out spacings and duct runs in anticpation of fitting the shed out properly. It's just as well that I'm used to moving piles from point A to point B or point C and back again while working from home.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Maaaaate, there's a segmented head thickhead joint right here, just an hour away, or 2 mins depending on where you are. Fresh faces on the cutters too!

I reckon we could hustle up a posse to head out your way and hustle things along - Glider spends a lot of time at Edith (10 mins east of Ob), NCA and I are just here, crowie and Andy are just 25 mins east of me, fletty will go anywhere for anything if there's a beer in it, so.....

    You got an oven?
The Girl is a baker right?
Gotta Barbie or summink to burn and some steel mesh? (and I just KNOW there are some great Bangers for sale in ..... can't think of the name....Supermarket in Ob.)

Got a place to pitch some tents?

Sounds like a get-it-on plan to me boy....

Sounds like the best idea in weeks right there...

To me... Sounds like Priority 1 is getting a bunch of floor to ceiling steel shelves put up which will get the piles off the floor.... Then you can sort out the rest... Used warehouse racking is surprisingly cheap my friend - and it goes together quick....

Andy, things have moved apace since last night.

On Sunday we have a minimum of 3 warm bodies at your disposal, and probably some more.

There are 2x steel frame shelves, a tube frame/mdf bench thing, an old solid bench with a Record vise (in Bathurst), and a trailer to carry it.

Plenty of 4x2 construction timber. Probably 2x1 pine sticks and ply to make cabinets.

A job site saw, tracks saws & tracks, routers and a plethora of hand tools are available to make some cabinets quick sticks.

Get ready sport, there's posse a'headin' your way on Sunday!

I love this community. We are all a bit nuts from time to time but the comrades pull together to help get stuff done.

You can say that again! I was really only having a rant to keep those who care updated and to help get my priorities straight. I didn't expect this sort of response!

I had a good chin-wag with Brett this morning and we're gonna have to change his moniker from FenceFurniture to Lightning... given the rate he can get thing moving along.

So fast, as a matter of fact, that I won't have my timber stock up here in time. Not to worry... all I need is temporary basic storage/shelving to give me a workspace. And radiata/mdf/etc is perfect for that. There's no real sense in cutting down perfectly good materials such as HW when it could be used for something more permanent.

So we've got 5 bodies plus maybe NCArcher, Adam's spare 10' bench with Record vise attached, 2-4 steel frame shelves sets, 1 or 2 sheets of 1800x900 Yellow tongue. I'll pu some bread and packets of bangers at Mawhood's in Oberon on the way through, and I have a wire rack that we can cook them on, as long as Skew can donate some of his best turning blanks to cook them with.

Adam is likely to be there around 8 with the bench, and the rest of us will arrive between 8 and 11. fletty and I may be a little earlier than that, but not sure yet.

Looking forward to it - it's been 4 years since the last one at Andy G!

I do have a Weber BBQ someone could use... but not me. Me and cooking anything beyond throwing a can of baked beans in a campfire? *SNRK* I'll pick up some heat beads on the way home today.

The domestic side is a bit more organized; SWMBO already has that sorted. I think. Whenever I ask she tells me she has it covered.

Except for chairs. If anyone wants something more comfortable than pulling up a log or sitting on the conc slab porch... well... BYO seat.

Looking forward to it - it's been 4 years since the last one at Andy G!
That long? Really? Where has the time gone?

The sad thing is that I can't think of any woodwork in that time that I've done simply for enjoying myself. Just the odd sub-contract, the urgent honey-dew and household maintenance. No wonder my 'old' shed was so disorganised when it came time to start packing!

I love you all so much! A big reason we picked this place was so Skew can finally get back to his woodwork. Having you all come out and help him get back to what he loves... it's amazing thank you. Be prepared for hugs.

    We'll have a webber bbq.
I'll have burgers and a few snags if Bretts go as quick as I expect (I've heard good things about Mawhood's), mini sausage rolls and mini beef pies.
Cheese, various veg, Salad, fresh rolls, perk coffee, instant coffee and black tea.
    Water and some soft-drink.

There's lots of places to park and the roundabout in front of the house should mean easy ingress and egress for everyone.
There might be cake. We're not driving anywhere so this one might survive the commute from the house to the shed (unlike the last one SKEW)

I can't guarantee gluten or nut free. I haven't had the chance to do my full kitchen sanitisation yet.
If anybody has any needs, vegetarian, vegan, diabetic, anything let me know I'll try my best.

Company' Coming! So much to do!

I'll throw a few folding camp chairs into the back of the ute plus whatever shelving planks I can find in the shed.

Well that was a really good day! Andy G was called in for work and unfortunately missed out, but fletty, Mick (Glider) and Adam (ozhunter) and I just had SO much fun putting together the fiddliest bloody shelves ever designed.

Adam was there shortly after 8 with a bench that is at least 2.4m long and comes with a small Dawn vise. fletty picked up some Yellow Tongue sheets from Andy G (thanks mate) on his way through, then picked me up, and we got there at round 10 or so (with snags from Mawhoods in Oberon). Mick turned off the highway and was right behind us, which was a pretty crazy coincidence given that he had started out from a completely different part of Sydney.

So, a nice big shed awaited us. The starting point was here:
    Skew shed 1 before.JPG

Adam and Skew had been putting the lathe together while they waited for us to arrive. The vacant back corner was a great place to put Adam's bench, and that then became a great place to put lots of heavy stuff to get it up off the floor. All of the stuff on the benches came from the back right corner of the shed, which is at the back on the left of the 3rd pic below.

    Skew shed 2 after.JPG

On the right hand side there you can see the light duty table that fletty donated. That became a home for some light stuff.

The other area of concern for Skew was the current timber stash ( the major stash is still down in Sydney). You can see some of it on the right over against the wall.
    Skew shed 3 before.JPG

So we assembled the three sets of rather troublesome fiddly bloody PITA shelves, so that all the shelves were the same height. Bolted a couple of them to the wall, a sheet of YT went on top and we got an extraordinary amount of timber stacked in it, with room to spare (but maybe not weight load to spare....).

    Skew shed 4 after.JPG

Annette (Skew's Girl) had us fed throughout the morning with an anti-pasto platter, followed by mini pies and sausage rolls. Lunch time rolled up and the snags went on the Webber. fletty brought along a slab of Kosciuszko Lager, and we were all very happy chappies. Most of the work we could do was done by then, so lunch was fairly extended and with much crap talked about, as you might expect when half a dozen woodies get together with beers and food.....

Then, Annette showed up with a ripper of a chocolate cake and cups of tea.

Thanks to Mick, fletty and Adam for their time and goodies. It has taken a fair load off Skew's shoulders, I think.

On the way out, just after we turned off the Great Western Hwy, fletty and I spotted what appeared to be a church constructed from corrugated iron. "Best we have a look at that on the way back!" we agreed. We are both fans of corro, and the photographs that it can make, especially in raking light. Neither of us can ever recall seeing a church built from corro.

We didn't take a really specific note of where it was, figuring it would be easy enough to see. But we didn't remember that it was not far from the Hwy, so on the way back we thought we must have missed it.

"WAIT UP - there it is!". As luck would have it there was nobody behind us, so heavy braking was in order.

Sure enough, the whole thing is made from corro, and looks to be sealed up and not used. No name on it anywhere, so we can only call it the Lowther Church. The associated cemetery is still very much used, with plantings as recent as 2017 (maybe even later). Happily, today was the first day of light with that lovely winter quality to it - a seasonal change day.

    Lowther Church 1.JPG .... Lowther Church 2.JPG .... Lowther Church 3.JPG

This was around 4 o'clock, so in very late light (60-90 mins later) this place would be looking fantastic. (I was desperately missing my polarising filter for those 3 shots above)

    Lowther Church 5.JPG .... Lowther Church 6.JPG .... Lowther Church 7.JPG

fletty might be along later with some pics that he took. I have always found it interesting to shoot the same place as someone else at the same time. The way that two different brains see things is really interesting.

Skew currently has internet access only when he is in Katoomba, and that will only be until Thursday, so it will be a while between drinks. They are having *some difficulties* getting the phone put on in the new place. Apparently Telstra have to "put some infrastructure in" first.

I should have taken some pics of the view - maybe fletty did? Out the back of the house looks across a really nice valley (this is grazing country - sheep I think). Very very peaceful. Nil road noise, in fact nil noise of any kind. No neighbours for...I dunno....½km or more?

I expect that Skew is going to change the noise levels pretty soon....
