    It's looking pretty good Brett.

I recall when we built our house in the Hunter Valley more than twenty years ago I asked the building inspector when he came to approve the frame whether it was strong enough. He laughed and explained that when he was doing his training his mentor said give the frame a really good shake and walk away. If it's still standing when you look back it will be all right.

He didn't shake my house frame as he would have put his shoulder out! I think your shed will be plenty strong enough particularly after the cladding is attached as this adds considerable rigidity even if the frame is a little unconventional. Also my memory is that your whole block is quite sheltered from high winds.

    Regards
    Paul

Mmmmm, all relative. The winds up here can get pretty ferocious. Yes, we are somewhat sheltered, and yes the shed is at the lower part of the block. During high winds it really becomes noticeable when I walk up to the top of the street (at the Highway level).

Certainly the tarp on the shed deck gets a real workout during gusty weather.

For future reference, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up Allan Staines's 'House Building Manual' or Simpson & Hodgson 'Building a House - Framing Practices' before you start any other such projects. They're both chock full of standard construction detailing and practices for conventional timber framed construction and are great resources if you don't have a building background.

Beyond that AS1684.2 is a brilliant reference, but it's fairly exxy. It is available on the web for free (eg here; you might need to refresh a couple of times to get it to work as the site is regularly overloaded) but access at your own risk yada yada.
Ate there free span tables anywhere. I have them on disc but often work away and only have phone on me

Yikes! Hopefully things have improved in the last 20 years!

Without getting too technical, for a structure with a hipped roof in an N1 wind region, which is the lowest wind speed classification in Australia, you're looking at about 0.4 - 0.5 kPa design wind pressure (it varies with plan dimensions of building and roof pitch from 0.29kPa up to 0.61kPa). For a typical house you could easily have a design racking load of over 20kN - that's the equivalent of a 2T gravity load, if it were acting vertically.

Not that I'm aware of, sorry. Really is something that should be publicly available IMO but the privatisation of the Australian Standards means they're out for their pound of flesh.

    Default It's metal time!

Last job yesterday was to cut the 5 roof sheets to length (5.6m).

This morning I had to get all the dags off (mainly silicone plugging up old holes), and pressure wash both sides. The side showing in the pic is the underneath, but as you can see it's in great condition (apart from holes).

After I've watched the 3rd debate I'll be plugging up the holes and creases with Sikaflex to stick on little metal plates (cut from roofing offcuts), and then coating the top side with Penetrol, and on to the three coats of paint. With a bit of luck, pending breezy weather I'll be ready to fit the sheets to the roof on Saturday, maybe Sunday.

After that I have to sort out the box drains, and the metal walls can go on. Paint them and it will be finished.

Edit: just noticed I'd forgotten to paste the pic, and have added.

    Cheers Matt.

Actually I've decided to do the Penetrol & painting after the roof is installed. There's no urgency to paint, but I do want to get it functional.

That will have a bonus of getting paint over your roof iron screws as well [emoji106][emoji106]

Nah, didn't do the other lot either (did I Penetrol the first lot underneath? Don't think so)
