Default Workshop back in action after 14 months of inactivity.

I have stopped production, stacked my machinery and stored my stock timber(about 12-13 cubic metres worth) in my workshop since December 2014, during this time I went to South America on a solo bicycle tour for 4 months (from Ushuaia to San Pedro de Atacama, bordering Bolivia)

Just before I stopped production I bought a huge sander (25hp twin belt 1100mm). which I have never turned on in my workshop because 1. Ducting layout and 2. power supply issue

I always knew I need to spend some $$$ on the electrical and the ducting to make the sander work, I also need to re design the layout of the workshop, get a proper storage for the stock timber, moving machine around with different layout meaning longer lead for machines and more changes to the ducting layout. I have moved them around twice in the last 3 months.

and just this weekend, I have finally (well, close to) completed reorganising the workshop, the only item left to do is to connect the Ceccato refrigerated dryer and the pre/post filter to the compressor (bought the dryer/filter setup in 2014 but never connected)

here are some photos of the revised workshop:

one of the achievement during this move is that I have finally managed to install that air cleaner....

The dust extract on that mortiser is only 63mm. hugely inefficient. something to think about in the future.

The hood on the SCM S400P is 100mm, but the manufacturer has made allowance so you can simply unscrew the hood and replace with something larger if you wish.

The holytek bag house dust extractor will be replaced with an Alko or a Felder unit later this year, or early next year, or when I have enough money.

Its ugly and there isnt much I can do. I dont have much ceiling space to play with. only 2.7m. the black flex is 150mm. the clear is 125mm.

not quite finished.... the refrigerated dryer, the pre and post filter needs to be connected to the compressor.

SCM 1100mm twin belt sander. The main motor of this beast is 25hp. It has star delta starter but I doubt it would work with my current power supply of 63amp, considering in rush amp would be 3-4 times FLC with Star delta, therefore I bought a Danfoss VT2800 VSD, the purpose of this is to limit the inrush current to the FLC of 34amp.

The industrial electrical company I have hired advised to wire the main motor to the VSD and everything else on the sander runs on a different lead/source and they have done so, they gave me a good tutorial on the VSD operation, the manual for the VSD is as thick as a dictionary, A4 size.

After the wiring was completed and main motor happily spinning I hired Jacks Machinery to do a calibration/service on the machine, we couldnt get the blower to work and after viewing the electrical diagram it was found the blower is connected to the Star-delta starter (which we disabled to connect to VSD), we reconnected the power supply of the blower to the belt motor. I took time off my daytime job so I can work with the technician on my machine so I know whats going on. It was time well spent.

are you sure about that ?

Dredging the memory from 42 years ago, the purpose of a star-delta connection is to limit the starting current to around 2x the full load current.
Still a sizable wack on a 64 Amp circuit, but not enough to brown out the neighbours.

TBH I am getting mixed info from 2-3 to 3-4 times the FLC. taking the worst assumption here of 3-4 x FLC.

I need spare capacity on the amp supply at startup because the extractor and compressor will be running... the compressor is 7.5kw, dusty is 4kw.

the "octopus" is only a temporary until I upgrade the extractor.... however with my record, any setup that suppose to be temporary turns out anything but temporary lol

The other thing to consider on something like that is a soft start circuit as it will help avoid broadcasting the startup to the neighbours.

I also notice your ducting uses W junctions - three ducts joining at one point.
For big DCs like yours it makes little difference but on small DCs this adds considerable turbulence and reduces flow compared to using 2 Ys one after the other - the further apart they are the better.
I also realise that space sometimes precludes doing much else.

Hi Bob. yes I understand the W junction adds turbulence... but there is no other way I can make it to work, the space and money is very limited.. if I had 5 m of ceiling height and at least $5,000 of ducting budget....

amazing set up, I can only dream of something like this. I live on a farm without three phase, it's very limiting...

Thanks, I only wish I had more time to play in my workshop! it took sometime to build of course.... a workshop without 3 phase is very limiting... but I choose to bite the bullet and have the 3 phase power installed, the total cost of the 3 phase is in excess of $10,000 but thats all good.
