Most inspiring work everyone. This comp has been a great example of how the net can bring all sorts of folk together from all over the country (world) to have a fun time.

Thanks Neil for making all this possible.

You folks rock. The boxes are great and the entire forums thing is just wonderful. Congrats to all the contestant and organisers. Good luck to the judges.

I'm having trouble voting. I'm glad I have until next Tuesday morning, 9 September 2008 at 9:20 am to make my decision.

    cheers

I was wondering if it'd be possible to have a separate beginners vote, so that people who voted for a non-beginner (as in everyone but 1...) have a chance to vote for Best Beginner too... Feel free to shoot me down if you think it's a dumb idea

    Cheers,
    Dave

    Kudos and Greenies for all!!!!

“When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think...that a time is to come when those (heirlooms) will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, ‘See! This our father did for us.’ “ --John Ruskin. Audels Carpenters and Builders Guide, 1923 Theo Audel & CO. New York.

    I agree.

I was one of those who Noel tapped to judge, and I guess you all know how difficult a job that is... Especially from pictures, not being able to hold the boxes, examine them close at hand, feel the weight of them and examine them for the slightest flaw.

Judging was also made difficult by not having a chance to see the finer points of assembly and the joints holding things together.

It was my job to choose winners, but we all know there were no losers in the whole group. Each box was used to push the maker's understanding of technique and express creativity. What a wonderful concept... Each box maker starting out with similar material and discovering what could best be made from it. Even the knots got used effectively as elements of design! Did anyone have any scraps?

I offer my sincere congratulations to all who participated. Maybe next time I'll have a chance to do a box, too, though seeing in advance what the competition might be has me worried.

    very best wishes,

    Doug Stowe

If you dig out the discussion about the previous challenge, you'll find that in my humble opinion that was the logic consequence of how the idea was being shaped by the members' contributions to its evolution, lest participation fades away. But, as hands-on people, we learn best by doing...

I'm confused. Isn't that poll at the top of this page the judging system? The one where entry #5 has about half the votes.

    G'day,
Way back in the WWF Box challenge thread, as the instigator, FunkyChicken wanted a poll for 50% of the points and Three Judges for the remaining 50%.
Hence the poll...and judges. The first thread of the entries details the judges
    http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=78386

And there's a poll for the beginners as well here.https://www.woodworkforums.com/f249/2008-wwf-box-challenge-vote-favourite-box-beginner-box-maker-78554

    Thumbs up

    to all the entries.

It was a tight call for my vote, but in the end I let my gut make the call.
I make things, I just take a long time.
