Exclamation 7.30 Report on History of Aussie Classical Guitars, Players & Timbers

    Hi All,

This coming week (exact day to be confirmed) the 7.30pm report will be airing a piece on the above subject. It will be interviewing Slava Grogorian (One of our most treasured Classical players), Antony Field - Head of Guitar at Victoria College of the Arts. (Both have performed with Saffire Aussie Quartet Classical Guitar), Chris Wynne of Thomas Lloyd Guitars (Luthier & Teacher at The School of Guitar Making and a classical player), students from the Guitar making classes and footage of Antony playing 2 x Aust timber guitars (One is Fiddle back blackwood and the other is Black Hearted Sassafrass) in the settings of Monstalvat in Eltham, Victoria where the Guitar Making School is located.

It will probably be the last piece of the night about 4-6 minutes. Look out for it! I will only find out the exact day the day before so I will try and post it ASAP.

I will also post in events on the forum

We did a similar thing on the history of guitar with a regional network over 20 years ago, it flopped rather badly as in Central Vic guitar is held in high regard for Yeee Haaa, silly big hats and belt buckles.
I spent some time at Montselvat and studied with Sue Ellis for a while and formed a small consort with one Jack Shepherd who was a former oboeist with the MSO until he saw the light and joined the clergy.
As for guitar building, did make one classical, looked nice but was acoustically dead, will leave that to the experts now (and Kiwigeo who seems to have the knack).
At present I am about 15 years into procastinating the idea of building a lute, don't know if this is easier than guitar or not, a few more years and I may well find out.
I hope this one goes well and will watch out for it.

Stuck out in the middle of the Timor Sea.....no ABC on the TV...Id have to fight the roughnecks to get the TV turned to ABC if we could get it.

I expect a full in depth commentary on the program thanks guys (and gal).

    Cheers Martin

Chris hopes to be getting a copy of the recording. So you may be able to see it after all. A copy could come your way. Somehow.

And yes the gal is called Fiona.

    Cheers

P.s. May be getting a stand at the wood show in melb. To be advised. For the guitar school.

Thanks Iain, I know of Sue Ellis, she is quite well known. Had a bit to do with Sebatian and John Williams too I think. Anyway, I hope too that the ABC's history is better than mine on who is who in the zoo of guitars and famous people.

    Cheers

P.s Did you check out my guitar pics under musical instruments. "Girl makes guiatar" etc. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Sue Ellis was a student of Sadie Bishop who was a student of Segovia, she is also the daughter of the late Bill May (Maton which was going to be called Maytone but decided it sounded crappy).
Don't think she had much to do with Williams, her former husband may have had a bit to do with Williams father as he (Ellis) was a jazz drummer.
I recall she was not impressed with Slava Gregorio (sp) in his early days but will bet she has to eat her words today.
Will have a look at the piccies later.

LOL..thanks for the vote of confidence Iain. I wouldnt say I have the knack...Im just stubborn and when I put my mind to something I dont give up until I succeed or it kills me. On a steep learning curve with the guitar making and there are people out there much better at it than me.

I too have a passion for lutes and plane to have a crack at building one at some stage.

Zed I merged the 2 posts.

Do you guys want the thread in Woodies Events, or in the Musical Instruments, or doesnt it matter?

    Out of my league sorry.
I am just a floor sweeper, sweeping up the ciggy butts.
