Finally got home to the sunshine state yesterday afternoon. It has been a most interesting week starting with the GTG. It really was very rewarding meeting up with so many people I felt I knew but of course had never met.

I think others have already announed their thanks to Brett and Lola for hosting the event and I too would like to endorse those sentiments. It really is a testimony to his organising abilities. Thanks Brett.

Yesterday I set out from the Upper Hunter at 0445, after having spent several days milling some timber, and was on shedule to make Millmerran by midday. Unfortunately, Brett, knowing my courier skills asked me to drop off some colt drills at Harold and Saxon. They are situated in Warialda and I litteraly have to drive past the door on my way home.

I ended up meeting Trent Powrie and spent two and a half hours talking chisels and timber to him. I could have stayed there all day I think as it was all fascinating. Some of you may know that he has had a serious health issue, but he is recouperating well and in fact he was at the workshop to begin catching up on the orders for the group buy.

I found it amazing that he was producing these chisels, which are aguably the best western chisels anywhere in the world, from a workshop out the back of nowhere in particular (apologies to Warialdians, but I'm sure they would know what I mean).

I am going to supply him with a little spotted gum next time I go through and I came away with some timber blanks. His knowledge of timbers and metalurgy was mind boggling. We should definitely support him and all those of you who have orders with him are definitely in for a treat: I guess you know that already.

So it was an unusual day: Seven hours of driving, 2 1/2 hours with the world's most formidable chisel maker, a couple of hours at a mother's day piano recital in Millmerran and finally unloading my ute load of spotted gum. I slept well!

Great to hear you made it back Paul. Was nice meeting you and getting to know you a little more too. Hope your timber works out for your projects. Love to see a build thread on your solar kiln when you do it.

Indeed. However, most of us are interested in the workbench build.

I'll see what I can do. My plans are to start a WIP thread for the workbench and also a more detailed process of the milling for the timber milling section at least in part there because the timber milling forum has been quiet of late.

I enjoyed our talks during the stay with Brett.

then I thought to meself, Bushie mentioned he did some blocks for my boy's school, even hand sawed the diagonal bits. Damn they are not here, must have left them at Fencies, bvgger.

Oh and thanks for the 4 x 4 oregon. I've managed to turn down a bit for the round blocks. Will post in the block thread tomorrow after I take a couple of pics

I met him at one of the woodworkshows a couple of years ago - nice chap, happy to talk with a novice such as I. Oh and his chisels were awesome

We'll not have one of our boys with a bad taste in his mouth via a parking ticket. Particularly one who has made an excellent contribution to the forum and lives the spirit of it.

The riffler #6 is a hand stitched jobbie from Liogier, France. The stitching grain is #4, second finest, and it has been sapphire coated. This coating is 3800 Vickers hardness (Tungsten Carbide is 2283) so it should stay sharp for a long, long time. Furthermore, it will not rust

Greg the only money parting my hands that day went to Fletty & Pat........who then had money to buy your timber there was no way I was going to get involved with a bidding auction when someone like Skews Girl is after it.

Whats this about October 13th Blue Mnts GTG first I've heard............is that a Friday?

Nah, he means Oct this year.

The next one will be on a Sunday in Oct or Nov, that isn't a long weekend, out of school holidays and doesn't clash with any other major woodies event around Sydney. I'm going to set the date pretty soon so that y'all can plan ahead.

Thats going to interesting what with Trend Timbers Open day and H&F 3 days and usually Carbatech throws something in just to keep up about that time But if its Mid Oct she'll be sweat I reckon although maybe still snowing in Katoomba.

I tried to bid but she outbid me too :'(


Is there another one in October.

I have one in Jerilderie Feb next year for those interested.
