Box Dimensions: 100mm high, 161mm wide and 261mm long.
Intended use: Treasure!!

Made From:
Lid top... Bandsawn Silky Oak veneers cut from a small gnarly lump, no specific
design, pattern was completely dependant on revealed grain, made up as I
went along until the layon was suitable size for a lid.
Lid btm...Quartersawn Silky Oak from straight timber. Both veneers laminated
onto 6mm reclaimed MDF.
Box btm...Quartersawn Silky Oak laminated onto 6mm MDF, one side only (btm
side)
Sides, front/rear...10mm thick solid Jacaranda, sides...10mm thick solid
Silky Oak, these pieces came from timber which included a small branch.
Handmade Hinges...Beefwood and Brass.
Front decoration/knob...Beefwood.
Lower box inside...flocked (red).

Construction...10mmx10mm box joints for the sides, lid and btm panels are
fitted into a narrow rebate the width of the thickness of the panel to be
flush with the sides, the hinges and front deco./knob are glued in position,
Titebond 2 glue used throughout.
The veneered panels were glued using West System in a press.
The hinges only allow opening to just over 90?
Finish... Hand sanded thru to 400 grit then applied Gilly Stephenson's Lemon
Cream furniture polish

Front Sydney Blue Gum, Sides species unknown rescued from an old wardrobe thrown out in a council cleanup, the lid is a combination of both. The base is 6mm radiate ply.
50mm Brass butt hinges. Inside is flocked in blue. The box is finished with 4 coats of Danish Oil sanded to 800 grit between each.

This is my first box and was made using a Gifkins Jig. It is a present for a friend of my wife’s for her 60th birthday

Title: Pencil box

Box dimensions: 190mm wide x 280mm deep x 70mm high
Intended Use: Pencil box
Made from: Fijian Kauri (Agathis Moorei) carcass: tambour made from
artists pencils glued to Fijian Kauri strips, mounted on cotton duck;
tambour tracks lined with velvet.
Finish: Sanded to 800 grit, finished with white shellac and Livos
Kunos oil.

Special details: Agathis Moorei was named in honour of the first
director of the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens, Charles Moore, and the
tree from which this box was made was planted by him in 1853. It died
prematurely in 2007, due to the roosting habits of the Grey-headed
Flying Fox, and had to be removed. It was milled and distributed to a
number of woodworkers and artists to make commemorative pieces, which
will be exhibited and sold to raise funds for the gardens. I was
fortunate enough to be invited to participate in this project.

Made from: The main body, tray, hinges and feet is Figured Jarrah with the lid insert Curly Jarrah ex DjarilmariWA. The base and tray base are felt salvaged from a pool table over 3.6mm marine ply. Finished in White Shellac, EEE-Ultra Shine and Natural Wax. The lid also features a jarrah gasket.

Intended use: Keepsakes Box, given as engagement present.
Made from: The main body is Red Cedar. Lid insert is Tassie Myrtle burl. The base is pig skin suede over 3.6mm marine ply. Finished in Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil. The lid also features a Red Cedar gasket. The lid simply lifts off from 2 finger recesses, one left and right.

Made from: The main body is figured Huon Pine as is the tray. Lid insert, hinges and feet is Tassie Blackwood. The base and tray base are pig skin suede over 3.6mm marine ply. Finished in White Shellac, EEE-Ultra Shine and Natural Wax. The lid also features a Huon pine gasket. The wooden hinges also include wood pins.

Bubinga and Wenge. Each piece of Wenge railing turned into dowel at the ends, inserted and wedged.

Made from: Qld Maple, Budgeroo and Queen Ebony with a Tassie Myrtle Burl Lid insert. Base is Marine Ply covered in pig skin suede. Finished with Hard Shellac sprayed on then Natural Wax

Wow! great boxes. Hard to pick a winner from those, they all look winners to me. Great to see wooden hinges being used more in box making, adds a lot of character to the project. Well done guys.
