A friend in Japan was able to source a set of 5 slightly used for me. Would struggle to get them new now. I heard there was a 7 year waitlist which now may have been scrapped and he's just supplying 20 odd guys in Japan. His personal health isn't good last I was told.

I waited 3 years for mine, but that was about 10 years ago. 7 years now would not surprise me.

That is a long wait indeed but good things take time...
I have asked at japan-tool.com if I can join the wait-list, haven't heard back yet. Wondering if there is another way to join the wait-list?
While searching, I came across this.

Are there any other hand forged Japanese chisels will you recommend? Is the Oiire Mentori the way to go as general use bench chisels?
Japan-tool.com recommends Konobu along with Kikuhiromaru as a cost effective alternative.

I'm fairly certain there is no wait list now as he is only producing work for about 20 craftsman in Japan and that will be it. But worth a try, all the same. I could be misinformed.
I have some konobu chisels they are nice to work with. Very well made, high quality steel and finish. Still a bit of a wait from him, too. Jindaiko has some excellent well priced chisels. Sold to westerners through a Japan based American man by the name of Stanley Convington. Well priced and very hard steel. I'd look into those. Less wait times, too. I have mukomachi nomi from him and they are great. I knocked out a heap of bridle joints in pin oak and the edge was still in good shape.
