    Smile Pyrography

I hope that this fits in with woodcarving, but have any of you blokes or Blokesses ever tried your hand at pyrogarphy (Is that the correct spelling) and is it difficult to do?

I have seen a couple of Canadian web sites on the subject but a first hand advisory council such as these forums is far more valuable as informants.

Pyrography is the correct spelling and yes it is easy to do. Well I can say that as I do the turning and the Blonde does the pyrography.
It is like any other craft learn the basics then practice practice practise.
There is some good books around or go to your local library and check it out.

You can draw on just about anything, timber, plastic, rag paper{also used for water colors} leather, almost anything that will burn.

We use and recommend the razortip units as they are easy to control and the hand peices are small just like using a pen.

When transfering your pictures use grey or white graphite paper do not use blue carbon paper because it stains your peice and you cannot rub out any lines that may be left.

If you want to add color to your pictures do it very subtily as a small highlight , some people put too much color in and it looks more like a painting. We use the Jo Sonja paints or water color pencils.

One word of caution It Is Addictive.

Thank you very much, Jim, very informative.
I remember seeing an old bloke, maybe in the territory, that did this type of art work and he was charging thousands of dollars for his work. Admittedly it was very good.

I am not looking at it that way, I just want to explore more things before I cark it. I have never been frightened to have a go.

I will take your advice and lok around the library.

To Bob, no I haven't yet, I will though, soon.

PTC we stock the transfer paper. Look in the pyrography section www.cws.au.com
Also some of the books and the razortip machines.

the wife and i bought a janik pyrotool about 7 years ago
    we both use it heaps
i like to put borders around my carvings with it (rope pattern)
some pyrotoolings we do we spray clear
others we use derwent colour pencils
some patterns are just straight from the kids colouring in books
some are out of our heads
    and others from carving patterns.com
it is so easy to loose track of time when burning
and is also a good hobby for the winter months
    happy burning
    cheers

That's not fair, now I am excited.

Great work people, if I get started I hope I can come up with something like your work.

I wonder if you could hang a couple of mullet slabs over the work and have smoked....Just joking!!!!

If Bob Thomas is looking, I didn't get the paper yet, and to the others I was lookingat water slide decal paper.

I've been wanting to get in pyrography for a while now and was wondering how much it costs to set up.

    Cheers
