advice please
Hi guys, I realiseI'm looking at the bottom end of equipment but need to start somewhere. There is a 14" Baker band saw for sale locally as a part of a deceased estate. It's an old Baker brand, no blade so I guess the first concern is how common are they. I'm told the father was a carpenter and used it in his shop for ages. I turn it on and it appeared to work?? couldn't check the condition of the belt unfortunately. It's $80 or offer ($50??) what I'm asking is does any one know if it's a good product at a bargain price or is it rubbish and I should keep looking. (only considering it because it's around the corner lol)

$50, or $80 for that matter is not a lot of money is it. I'd reckon it would be a good starter. Blades are pretty much standard lengths.

Here's a pragmatic point of view - at $80, if it starts up, and works, you could even get a custom blade made up for it - that won't set you back a whole bunch, and you have a working bandsaw for not a huge investment, that will be enough to get you going. If you use it for a year or two only before upgrading, it will show you a couple of things - firstly, whether you use it much and thus, how much of a better unit you want, and also what features to look out for on your next one if you ever do upgrade it

Hi.
If you are able to restore it to safe working condition then go for it.
The main thing I would look for are cracks in the wheels... if they are cast and have cracks then it is quite dangerous to use.
Blades can be made to length for around $20 ... look around for one at the site ... even if broken .. to get the length you need
be prepared to spend a bit if time in getting the blade guides reset .. even if an engineering shop has to make up a set it may be worth it.
regards

Thanks for the responses guys, I guess I'll give it a try, as has been said, probably a good place to start, not going to send me broke if it's a bad investment
