Thread: New Bandsaw on order.

One thing I have found over all my years conversing on a computer, is trying to relay your intent so that others will see it the way you meant it. It just isn't as easy as it seems unfortunately.
Something I remember from some TV show was an interesting quote. "Say it, forget it....write it, regret it."

Did a bit of work down by the creek on the tractor yesterday and noticed some old dead wattle trees laying around, so I'm going to cut some up and see if I can get anything worthwhile from them.
I'd love to be able to get some nice wattle veneers from these trees, but one of the problems with wattles is that they are very prone to borer attack and also as a consequence of the borers in the trees is the black cockatoos that chew up the trees to get at the borers.
If I manage to get anything useful, I'll let you guys know and as I have these dead trees all over the place, I'll be able to provide anyone who wants to try this with all the wattle you want.

Glenrob, for what its worth I recently fitted a Kreg fence to my makita bandsaw. I have yet to try it for resawing, but overall the aluminium sections are very solid, and well designed. The main locking knob where it clamps onto the front rail, could be better, but works (may damage the rail over time??) but for the price was a very good option.

Hows the new saw coming along Glenrob? Still enjoying it? Was looking at a few JET bandsaws the otber day at a local supplier, I think im still going to wait for the Sydney WW show since i found out Laguna are going to have a presence there may be coming home with a same model as yours or a 14"..well see what they have in stock

The saw is going great so far. I've been resawing anything I can get my hands on lately. Just did a log this morning that was on a firewood heap, but it looked like it had some possibilities. I cut a flat face to sit it on and proceeded to slice it into about 15mm wide pieces. Some of them were affected by borers and rot as I expected, but I did manage to salvage some nice useable pieces from it.
I'm now looking at all the dead wood on my property as possible useful timber for all sorts of future uses.
I'll be at the WW show too, probably with my son. If we happen to be there on the same day it'd be great to catch up. Just look up.....I'm 6'5"

I've been taking a long hard look at alternative fences, but so far I'm staying with the standard fence. It stays nice and parallel to the blade and for now I've not had any issues with blade drift, so with the saw working to my liking, I'll keep it as is. I'm still always on the hunt for anything that will make the saw a better machine to work with tho.

See that's the reason I want one. I can't wait to be able to resaw a large variety of wood down to a use able size for cabinetry/box making. I think at this stage the reason why I want the jet is because I can pick it up that day and drive home to play with it. Where I'm sure once I see the Laguna in the flesh in sydney and i wipe the drool off the floor ill want to take that one home

You should post up some pics of the wood u have been able to salvage from your property.

Great to hear I won't have to look down when we're chatting.
A quick little anecdote that might make you smile.
Some years ago my wife and I went to Hawaii for a week's hols and because back then I was still heavily into the Corvette scene, I was able to hook up with a few people over there and got to see the place from a different perspective than the average tourist.
The day before we were scheduled to leave, there was one bloke left I still had to catch up with, so during the phone call where we arranged to meet, I mentioned my height and said to just look up. He countered with "I'm 6'6" so it might be you looking up" We had a good laugh and arranged to meet for a drink later that day after which he took us to his home to meet his family a drive his Vette. The part that made me laugh to myself was that this guy being 6'6" was the Commander of a US submarine!
As I said before, we got to see more than the average tourist, and because of his position in the US Navy, we got a private tour of Ford Island Navy yard, which at the time was being set up for the movie Pearl Harbour. It was great to see all the mock planes and buildings from 1941 that they were using as props.

Anyhow, enough about my trip down memory lane. The only thing I can advise you is not to go into buying a new bandsaw just because there is one available on the day if you can. Make sure which machine you want and stick to it. You may have to wait and even have to pay for delivery, but it will all boil down to you being happy in the long run with the saw you buy.

I finally got to see the 14 at the Canberra Show this weekend past, unfortunately they were all sold out including the next shipment. Having finally seen one in the flesh, I was sold, but disappointed that I would have to wait. Then it was noted that the 18 had not been sold. The end result is I'm now the proud owner of an 18 inch Laguna Bandsaw!
