Bandsaw blade joining
Ok I am new to the site but not woodworking. I was a teacher for 40 yrs.
Many years ago we used to rejoin broken blades due to cost and how often they seemed to snap.
Now I want to resize some blades I have and have not had any success.
We used to use silver solder, scarf the joint and bingo.
Now either I have the wrong silver solder Or the wrong flux.
I have looked on the web and 50% silver solder is dam expensive. Has anyone tried brass brazing to join the blades does it really need to be silver solder ?
Cheers

Joining bandsaw blades
OK I found a number of threads on the topic and it seems that the silver solder I thought was OK may be too low in Silver but it is so old I cannot tell what it was OR I have the wrong flux OR i am overheating it.
I looked at buying a new stick of 45% Silver solder $109 for 5 sticks ouch. Does anyone want to sell one of their sticks as I think I will be dead before I use that many.
Cheers

I've just failed abysmally at my first attempt at repairing a bandsaw blade, but I suspect my grandfather's flux was probably the issue.
Anyway, re: silver solder, my local Bunnings seems to be clearing out the TradeFlame products, so I scored 2 long sticks of silver solder for $2. Might be worth a look at Bunnings?

Not sure why you are looking for 50% silver as all you need is this. The price varies on these depending on the silver content but they only go up to 15%. Have you made a jig to hold the 2 ends of the blade in place while you solder them.
Brazing is not an option as you need to apply too much heat and it doesn't flow as easily.Dallas

I use ribbon silver solder to join my band saw blades. It is available on ebay or just google , ribbon silver solder.

If you have access to someone with a MIG welder just get them to butt weld the two end together, then grind them flat and ANNEAL. This is what the blade manufacturers do. this is similar to the contraption they have on the side of the Doall metal bandsaws

I bought two sticks of 45% silver and easy flo flux for way less than that from BOC. Their website listed a higher price but in the store they charged less.
I used it for repairing some tungsten tipped bandsaw blades and even under very high tension the joints haven't failed .

Hi guys
im very late to post this but it is uneck information.
60 years ago I spent a lot of time talking with an old Scottish cabinet maker and on several occasions I watched him join broken bands.
He would scarf both ends on a bench grinder.
cut a three pence into 4 and place one piece on the scarfed blade along with some flux (for the love of me I don’t remember what he used for flux)
Heat a pair of parallel blacksmith tongs to red hot.
he had a simple jig to hold the blade ends where he wanted.
the jig allowed the hot tongs to be clamped over the blade and melt the silver.
you may have to dig into Nannies Christmas cake coins for the threepence how ever at most it’ll only cost threepence for the silver 😂😂😂
