Bandsaw Blades in WA?
So, finally getting back around to a bit of woodworking and my workbench build. I want to get a new blade for my bandsaw, capable of ripping nicely through 3-4" of well seasoned Jarrah. I've heard that Starrett Woodpecker blades are pretty good, as are Lenox ones, but I have no idea where to find them. Hare & Forbes sell Starrett blades, but they seem to be a fairly standard type, albeit cheaper than whatever it is that Carba-tec sell in the same size/tpi.
I really don't want to have to wait 6 weeks for something to arrive from over east or overseas, and I'm not looking to break the bank. I just want something reliable, and non-sucky. So if anyone knows a quality retailer in Perth, I'd love to hear about them. Cheers.
PS. It's a 14" Carbatec Bandsaw that takes 2490mm blades. Probably looking for something between 1/2" - 3/4", 2ish TPI.

There is only one place to go.
Even though I am less than half an hour drive from them I get them delivered if I am not in a hurry.
When I have been there to pick up there have been couriers coming in and out continuously all day picking up boxes addressed to every state in Australia and overseas destinations.
My 1" 2tpi tungsten carbide tipped blade I use on my 21" saw is a brilliant blade. You cannot find the weld in it. there isn't even a break in the tooth pattern.
The bimetal blades I use on my 14" saw are good quality and very reasonably priced.

I used to shop around, now I just call McDivens, tell them what I want to do, they advise me on what blade to get and I pay what they ask. They have always given good value.
Usual disclaimer, just a happy customer, no other connection. I reckon you would have your order in your shed within a week in Perth
Cheers

I have the bimetal blades from Henry Bros in 10mm (which is what I use for everything). They require a little extra tension, but they come sharp and last a lot longer than standard blades. Cost more as well.
Now, are you aware that you can sharpen your own bandsaw blades? I've been doing it for a year or so. One for my Hammer 4400 takes me about 30 minutes. I bet a 14" machine would take about 15 minutes ... and it is dead easy!
All I use is a bench grinder and the 46 grit wheel on it. The aim is to grind a little flat on the rake on the blade. Just a touch, so that it creates a sharp edge to the tooth.

For a quality retailer in Perth I use Hughans saw service in Osborne Park. They sell and sharpen all types of blades.

Any idea of price Larry? Looks like they mostly do industry type stuff, so not sure if a one off would be cost effective.

Yes they do service industrial customers ( my cabinetmaker brother-in-law uses them) but they are real saw doctors and easy to deal with. I haven't purchased the size blades you are talking about so can't help with prices. The blades I have purchased (Hakansson brand) seemed to be a reasonable price. Give them a call.
Cheers

TPI should depend on how thick the material are you cutting . I usually use 3 TPI blade for 5" stock.

Spoke to the guy at Hughans, because the blade width capacity on my bandsaw is only 3/4", 3tpi carbon steel with hardened teeth is the best they can do
Got one of them from Hare & Forbes today, in a 1/2" size. Cheap, and almost certainly better than the 4tpi blade the bandsaw came with. Will try McDivens tomorrow or something, but I suspect I'll get the same story.
FYI the BS is a BAS-350B from Carba-Tec. Kinda wish i could run a 1" blade now
PS. I measured the wheels on the BS, the rubber is actually 1", and the metal is a little over, so for $35, I'm going to give it a go. Hughans are making me up a 1.5TPI 1" blade, so that should be sweet. If it doesn't work out, I can always use the blade for something else.

Why do you want a 1" blade? I have never used greater than a 1/2" over many years, including resawing. The wider the blade, the harder to tension - do you have a bandsaw capable of tensioning a 1" blade? The widest blade I ever used on the generic Carbatec 14" I had several years ago was a 3/4", and that was less successful than a 1/2" I moved to. I have just received a couple of Woodslicer blades from Highland Hardware (USA), which are specifically for resawing, and these are 1/2" only (and I now use a 4 hp 17" Hammer 4400).
You are welcome to bring your bandsaw blade around and I will resharpen it for you. As you may recall, I am in Rossmoyne.
Here is an excellent video:

The only reason to get the one inch blade is to get the bigger teeth. At this stage it's an experiment, as it's right at the top end of what my BS can potentially handle. If it works, great, if it doesn't, I'll use the metal for scraper stocks or some such.
I'm primarily interested in resawing very very hard, quite thick Jarrah at this stage. My 4 tpi blade just isn't up to scratch. Further down the track I'm also interested in resawing veneer, at which point I might invest in a better fence and a more expensive blade, but for now I'm still figuring things out.
I do remember roughly where you live, and as an added bonus, I can drive now, I have a car and everything. Look at me, being all fancy. So I might take you up on that offer at some point.
Anyway, gonna watch that clip now.
PS. This video is very interesting. So this guy is using a 3tpi 1/2" blade? I picked one of those up today for not much at Hare & Forbes. Might not be the greatest quality blade in the world, but certainly better than what came with the saw. I might set it up tomorrow and see how it goes (following the instructions in the video ofcourse).
