Bandsaw Size Problem - Length?
I have an old Jet JWBS-18 band saw that I have recently purchased second hand. The problem that I have is that I cannot adjust the tension on the blade properly as the blade/blades that came with it seem to be too long.
The book says that the blade length is 133 inches, which is 3378.2 millimetres. The blades that the old mate gave me with the saw have a label that says they are 3380 mm, so there is 18 mm difference.
When I try to tension the blade up, the adjustment screw in the spring falls out of the U shaped section (see photo) and this cause a bit of a problem with the top wheel as it is no longer held properly.
Would 18 mm make such a difference?
I see that the newer 18" Jets have a longer blade. This saw has the rectangular/square support column, not the triangular style of the newer model. It is probably 12 years old.
Thanks,
Alister.

I placed an Excel file on this site, somewhere, that allows you to take 4 measurements, and it will tell you minimum and maximum bandsaw length for your machine. I can't find the post, so I'll put it here again.

When you consider that the difference between an untensioned blade and a tensioned blade is only about 5mm, i would think that 18mm would make a heck of a difference. I suggest you should buy a blade of the correct length to test things out.

Where are you getting 18mm from? The measurements you gave have a difference of 1.8mm
Those were the droids I was looking for.

NCArcher - you are correct. Bugger me! Just one of those things your/my brain tells you and you accept without question. 3380mm would be the nearest metric equivalent to 133 inches.
Back to investigating. Thanks for the replies.

Hi Alister,
Is the spring compressing when you turn the tensioning wheel? If not you may have a stripped thread.

Problem solved. Until NCArcher pointed out my mathematical shortcoming, I was focused on the wrong thing. On further investigation I found that the top wheel can be adjusted. So I pretty much adjusted it to the top limit and now can tighten the blade until it breaks and the screw stays within the U section.
Thanks all for the suggestions.
