Default Boutique 14" or mainstream 18"?

The interwebs are buzzing with admiration for the Laguna 14SUV, but local dealers in li'l ol' Hobart all say 'to get that amount of resaw you need at least an 18"', and push what they sell (Leda, and something generic/Chinese called MJ3448). The Leda has pretty basic looking guides, the MJ3448 has rollers.
So is it really justified to pay quite a lot more for a smaller, but boutique name-brand model, or go for more size & generic mainstream - for less $$$?
(Intended application: acoustic guitars, including cutting thin sheets for backs/sides/soundboards)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I just googled all 3 of those machines and they are all 3hp. That is serious power and they all should do the job for you. I am only going by what I read and have never seen any of them in the flesh so cant comment on build quality. The laguna 14 inch saw actually has the most depth of cut. Resaw performance depends on the power and the depth of cut mostly. Width wise you could cut a larger circle on an 18 than a 14. As I said I think any one of them will do the job for you going by the specs. I would read up on reviews on all 3 or better go and see them before making a choice.
    Regards
    John

I am in a similar situation and trying get to somewhere that actually has these saws in a showroom is almost impossible. Delivery charges to regional areas are a killer too. Price of the machine are only part of the equation as delivery varies considerably depending on where it has to come from.

Buy once cry once is a good moto for tools but it's hard to spend up big if when you haven't seen it in he flesh!

What I your budget? I was looking around $1500 but add delivery to most quality machines with resaw grater than 250mm and you are closer to $2K

I would suggest that TrevorMaq and Danger Mouse look at Carbatec's offering. They have stores in Launceston and Brisbane/Sydney (Go for brisbane. Same distance of even less maybe from Tamworth). This way you can inspect the machines and bring them back with you if you have a station wagon or trailer. probably less than the freight. Stores are open Saturday mornings. Just check they have your likely machines in stock before travelling. You could probably check the offerings from Hare and Forbes (and other machinery dealers) on a similar basis.
