    Default Carbatec 14" Bandsaw?

I'm looking to buy a bandsaw on a budget, and with the carbatec sale i can just about stretch that budget to the 14" Carbatec bandsaw.

I'm looking for any comments on that model from people with experience of it, or bandsaws in general.

This would be my first bandsaw, and the main task it needs to accomplish is to resaw 5"x3" well seasoned jarrah beams for a bench i am making. Is the 1.5hp engine up to the task?

    Any help would be appreciated.

The answer is YES. You can even get a good resawing work on 14" band saw with 1 HP .

Is this the one you mean ?

I have one and mainly use it for cutting turning blanks. It has handled some well seaoned ironbark fenceposts.

Buying bigger and better is fine IF you have the cash but mine works for me.

Strange this thread popping up at just the right time.
I too am looking at dropping the cash on a BS 350B. From my discussions with the Launceston Carbatec dealer, it actually may be a better proposition as a resaw than the more expensive CJT 3501 - 50% more horsepower and 2 speed.
Seemed to be a lot of bandsaw for the money.

Hey Reece, if you think that'll do for everything else you want to do but are just worried about the beams for your bench I'd grab it. You've gotta start somewhere and while it'd be great to get something bigger, if you're stretched at that price you're unlikely to find another $400 to make the next jump up in size in a hurry.

My saw is just down the road as a backup if the carbatec saw struggles.

My old Trade Tools 14" saw with a 1 HP motor sawed 160 mm veneers just fine, if not quickly, with a standard carbon steel 2 TPI 1/2" re-saw blade. The Carbatec is a better saw. Do yourself a favour and buy a really good blade. The blade does all the work. An average saw with a great blade gives pretty darned good results, but a top shelf saw with a cheap blade will cut like crap.

I kept my old saw for cutting curves etc when I got the shiny new Laguna SUV, which is a delight. That way the new saw has a re-saw blade on it permanently and I don't need to fiddle around changing blades/set-up. You might like to consider getting a decent second hand saw, if one is available. That way you save some loot and a shiny new toy is less distant in the future.

    Have fun!

    John

Well, I did it and handed over the cash on the Carbatec BS350 today. I also purchased 2 blades, a 6mm 6TPI and a 13mm 6TPI, in the words of the Carbatec man, "the factory blades aren't good for much".
I cannot open the box until Saturday as this is partly my Son's fourteenth birthday present and he won't visit me until then. I gave him the option of having the 10" Carbatec wholly as his own, or going me halves in the BS350.
    He chose wisely.

Thanks for the help all! If I can stretch to that budget, I will definitely get it I think. I really can't afford a bigger better saw, and I'm not expecting a perfect cut, just that it cuts without burning out or exploding. Sounds like it'll do everything I want it to. I'll let you know how it goes.

I had a look around, the second hand market in Perth hasn't got a lot going for it atm I'm afraid. The bandsaws they do have, people want close to sticker price for. I've been burnt enough times in the past not to bother with anything less than an obvious bargain.

I agree with John. The saw and hp will be fine for most uses. Buy a good blade like a Lennox trimaster tungsten tipped blade and you can get superb results. I have such a blade on the H&F 14 heavy duty and get good results even cutting veneers up to 250 mm by 2 to 3 mm thick. Unless you need a bigger resaw you don't need bigger than a 14 inch. BUT do take the time to read how to set your saw up properly and then do it. They do not arrive properly set up and can give great disappointment unless you do so. The chinglish manuals are rubbish. The US sites Fine Woodworking or the related Start Woodworking (cannot remember which) has some excellent instructions. It is free to join their on-line info.

Not having had a bandsaw before, not really sure what I should be looking for in a blade, or where to get one from. I know carbatec sells them, but I don't see any brand names, so I don't know if they're any good. Obviously the length of the blade is determined by the size of the saw, but what about the TPI, and blade width? I suspect I would need two blades, one for resawing, and perhaps one for curve cutting work. Any thoughts on that?

I have the Carbatec 14" Bandsaw BAS-350B. I use it mainly for general purpose.

One thing I am not supper happy with it the fence but not a show stopper.
