Carbatec BAS 350B Poor quality cut
Hi all,
Brand new to this forum hoping to tap into the wealth of experience on here.
I got my hands on an old BAS 350B (Carbatec).
The thing needed a good clean, some rust removal and a tune.
The guide bearings will need replacing sometime in the near future but for now they aren't bad. Just a little noisy.
Initially it couldn't cut a straight line if it's life was in the balance.
Adjusting the guide bearing and run out soon fixed that.
Now it cuts straight and is a half decent saw.
I have one problem and a few questions.
* Is there a blade tension indicator on this machine? I'll be buggered if i can find it?
* Does anyone know where I can get a manual?
* What's the crank on the right hand edge, under the table. It looks like it goes into the lower pulley.
Looks like a tension mechanism to change out the lower pulley or motor belt.
Now for the question.
When I resaw I can easily cut 1/8" vernier nice and straight, but looking at the cut quality it is not smooth.
It has a wave/ripple to the cut surface, almost like the blade has a wobble in it. But the blade looks to be running ok.
Any thoughts?
cheers
Marv

This model name triggered a bell in my mind, so I did a quick bit of digging.
Carbatec have this to say about the BAS-350B: "We have updated the look & product code of our BAS-350C and BAS-350B (now BS-345H), however be assured, all specifications of this machine are the same as our tried and tested BAS-350C and BAS-350B."
I take this to mean they have now relabelled the machine as BS-345H, and that it's still being sold (indeed, that snippet of text came from the BS-345H page at Carbatec). I would think a nicely worded request, and/or perhaps a small amount of coin might get a copy from them for the BS-345H which is the machine you effectively have.
Sadly, I was unable to turn up a copy on the Internet (there is one at a particular site for the BS-345H but the site in question is extremely dodgy, and requires registration, I would suggest avoiding this). That said, it's quite likely this is a machine that is also being resold as a "house" brand by other places and companies, and if you can find a similar looking unit with a manual on the web, that too might solve your questions

To back up Midnight Man, I found the same thing, however I found a reference to the BAS 350B which opened a manual for a MJ34?
Whether or not it’s the same animal, I don’t know but here’s a link.

Theres also an earlier thread on this site asking whether the MJ34 is the same as a BAS350?
BAS-350 same as MJ34?

the crank on the right hand side is for the belt change between speeds, and it has an idler attached to keep the belt tight. Not in the shed at the moment but I will check if I have the manual for the bas 350.

Thanks most helpful.
Thought that what it was. Do you know if I need to change pulleys, gears etc to change speed, or just re-position the belt?

And the manual you pointed to has mj34 through out but bs14 on the front.
I think they are all the same.
The references to it being a sander are very funny.
Looks like there is no tension indicator, The manual says to tighten to an 8mm deflections.
I just used the old flutter method, ie. turn the knob until the blade stops fluttering. (With no guides near the blade)
The adjusted the guides.
