    Default Circle Cutting Jig Overkill

I have been making some mobile pot stands for SWMBO with some left over kwila.

    See link here

She is into Bonsai and contrary to the idea of small plants....she also has some large ones. I noticed 2 large circular pots in the garage that she hadn't used yet and I decided to make large circular stands for them so I made a new Circle Cutting Jig for my bandsaw to do the job. I only used stuff that was in the shed but I did go a tad overboard.

The Circle Cutting jig works perfectly and can handle any radius from 55mm - 1140mm.......NO that's not a typo...1140mm RADIUS. So if i ever need a 2.28m diameter wheel, I am sweet

(Please excuse the hand held movie from my camera...I didn't have a tripod handy so I was filming with 1 hand & rotating the piece with the other)

Nice job. I've had issue using similar for cutting bowl blanks for woodturning in thicker stock. Might be a case of tracking?

Love to hear how you go with 150mm thick and say 100mm r if you have cause to cut such.

Oh YouTube link did not work for me

I saw the video, running quite sweetly. I was mighty impressed with the amount of waste you allowed for when rough docking the components. Looked like you added one bandsaw kerf extra only

I think that's the reason Dave....I've tried clicking links on emails I received on my Ipad and unlike my home computer they just don't open.

Kuffy, thanks for that, I was really pleased with the accuracy as well.

    It all comes down to

    a) Making sure the blanks are square and sides all the same size

    b) Placing the pivot hole exactly in the diagonal centre. I screw a temporary scrap piece of timber on the bottom and drill the pivot hole just a smidgen larger than the pin size. This helps with fitting the blank onto the radius pin.

    c) Accurate measurement of the required radius from the side of the cutting blade to centre of pivot pin

    Hi Dave,
I found that if the blade is forward or back from the cutting edge it doesn't track properly. Cutting undersize is from memory too far back and oversize too far forward. I have an adjustable bolt that goes on the front that allows me to micro adjust so that the cut is on the line.
Can supply a pic if required.
    Hope this helps,
    Kryn

Pics are always good. I have pondered making it adjustable front to back as well

I have a circle template guide for my router, it can do radius up to 0.5 but creates a lot of dust so the bandsaw is easy to use and reduces the dust through the DC unit. It also means I can cut much thicker pieces.

I move the empty jig into the blade until the front of the cutting blade lines up exactly with the centreline. I then clamp a stop block against the jig to stop it going any further. I then pull the jig back and place the blank on the jig.

Start the bandsaw and move the jig into the blade again , the jig has a guide strip that fits into the table guide groove...when the jig hits the stop block, I know that the front of the cutting blade is exactly in the correct alignment so I don't get under or over cutting.

This is the top view of my Circle cutting jig, can go to about 650 diameter, by reversing the centreing strip. It has a dovetail on both sides, just to be different.

The adjustable stop, so that the blade can be set in the correct position.
    DSCF0402.jpg
Underside view of the adjustable stop, it touches just below the top of the table on the fence guide.

Underside view of the fine adjustment for the centre strip.

Top view of the centre strip with a view of the 7 X 6 mm threaded inserts.
I used a threaded insert, 6 mm for the centre pin, as it will allow me to put different sized pins in place, as required.

Hope this helps with those that want to make an adjustable circle cutter.
