    Default Fitting urethane tyres - guidance/advice req'd

I am about to fit some Carter ultra blue tyres to my 12" bandsaw.
The wheels have a 4.8mm wide x 2mm deep groove, and the corresponding protrusion on the back of the old rubber tyre is only 1.5mm, so I assume the tyres would have been flat.
I have some 3mm rubber strip and contact adhesive to fill the groove before fitting the new urethane tyres. Since the original rubber tyres sat flat, should I be trimming the rubber strip down flush with the wheel so that the urethane is also flat, or should I leave it proud to form a crown? If I leave it proud, is 1mm ok, or should I be aiming for something less/more? Should the top and bottom wheel be the same (ie. both crowned/both flat)?

I don't think you should do any cutting of the tyres.

If you do a search about these, you will find a thread I started last year (I think) about a pair of these that I fitted.

I just went out to the band saw and took these two pictures. It is a 14" unit, but I would suggest the concept is the same.

Why don't you email the manufacturer?

I did from the ebay site they have, I received a reply within about 30 minutes, if I remember correctly.

    Thanks guys,
I guess the question I asked is more related to the general setup of the bandsaw (of which I have less than zero experience) rather than anything to do with the urethane tyres. Their shape will conform to whatever the substrate is.
The original rubber tyres were flat. The rubber I have to fill the groove in the wheel will sit 1mm proud, causing a crown unless I trim it down to the level of the wheel before I fit the urethane tyres. This is what I will do unless someone can tell me that having a crown will be beneficial on a machine that originally had flat tyres.
Then I need to know if the bottom wheel should be crowned as well or remain flat.
I hope I'm making sense here. I usually struggle with trying to explain things clearly.

I would not mess with the crown. If your original tires were flat did you have issues with drift? Does your upper wheel ride on a hinged shaft - tilts left or right?

Thanks Don. I haven't actually used this machine. It came with a few other things from a deceased estate about 5 years ago, and it's been sitting in the back corner ever since. I'm now trying to resurrect it.
The upper wheel has the tension knob on top, and a knob at the back to adjust the tracking.

Leave the crown on it, it’ll make the band track better

If you look closely at the pictures I posted, you may notice that the steel band is sitting on a crown, none of the teeth are resting on the tyre and that steel band is a small one sitting right dead centre.

This is a link to the second page of a thread I started with regard to purchasing urethane tyres for my bandsaw.

    Thanks Mick.
I ended up getting the new tyres fitted today. I still need to fit the new thrust bearings and get something sorted for new guide blocks, then it should be right to go, apart from sorting dust collection.

100% agree with the advice to not touch the rubber I have fitted these to my bandsaw with no issues and searched the net on how to install and found that the best way was to remove the wheels, check bearings and then use suggested jig to apply the tyres.
