Thread: Hammer N4400 and N3800 - costs

The 3 phase Hammer has a euro plug on the machine end which allows you to assemble the cable length of your choice. The 3 phase machine also has a switch which allows you to change the direction of the motor.

I saw the Laguna LT14SUV demo at the Perth woodwork show last year and was pretty impressed with it. The main features that were standard on the Laguna over the Hammer were the foot brake and power socket for the optional light, everything else can be purchased as option. That machine had all the fruit on it but it was already sold and to get one over would cost abt $400 which brings it in line with the N4400 price wise. Having other motor choices and a great local Felder dealer confirmed the final decision for me.

Just a note about the foot brake: the Laguna is external, while Hammer has the brake built in, and it kicks in when the machine is switched off.

On the 20 amp plug: as mentioned earlier, all items need to be specified. Mine came with a plug as I specified this. It did not come with the A3-31, but fortunately this, and the K3, work on a 15 amp plug.

Just realised this thread is old I've been wanting a bandsaw for over 12 months now! Everything is slow in my shed lol

I just spoke to a rep and the N4400 3 phase with ceramic guides is about $4500. Single phase is $4600. The bearing guides are about $600 less. The price has increased considerably since this thread started!

Are the ceramic guides worth extra? I figure there are costs savings long term but if you are a hobbyist and use the machine a few times a per month it would take a long time to make back $600. From a use point of a view, do ceramic guides result in better/more accurate cuts?

Can't comment on the ceramics as mine has the spinny metal bits. But, do you keep an eye on Machines4U? I picked up mine from an ad there. There've been a couple of Felder bandsaws recently - currently one in WA.

It's been mentioned before, but you need to get a written/emailed formal quote from Felder to know exactly what you're getting and what you're paying for (and they'll usually quote ex-VAT). It adds up very quickly, and the stories of being charged for individual screws are not exaggerated...

if you want a really really good bandsaw with Felder/Hammer, you have to go to Felders 640/740/840 range, these are made by ACM.

there is a 2nd hand 640 on machines4u for $4k, that is absolute steal deal. new they are 8k.

I have been using my single phase N4400 for a few years and fitted ceramic guides as soon as they were available. In my experience where I do extensive ripping cuts and trim cuts the ceramic guides do a better job of holding the blade position especially on the wider blades in the 1-2 TPI range.

How would you get something like that to Melbourne? Ask the seller to put it on a pallet and organise a trucking company to deliver to Melbourne? I wouldn't even know where to start in making calls - what are some trucking companies I can call?

A lot of commercial sellers can organise transport but if not have a look at he page freight brokers australia - Google Search

You can also speak to Felder. They can arrange for their machines to be transported (even if they're 2nd hand / private sales). May not be the cheapest option, but I've found them pretty helpful, and will suggest alternatives.

They recently moved my K3 for me, and as it was on a trip they were already doing for a service stop up here, I only had to pay half the delivery costs.

Itspretty straight forward, you ask the seller to put the saw flat on a largepallet, get a freight company to give you a quote to move it from A to B.


Even Iam tempted to buy this saw. Its not everyday you come across clean unit likethis.

I saw the unit in question the other day when I was visiting Felder Perth to pick up an extension table and some bandsaw blades. It looks to be in near-new condition but I only saw it from a distance as Con, the salesman at Felder Perth, was his usual garrulous self and I got distracted by the conversation. If it's going half price I'd say that's likely to be a killer deal. The table on it is massive - easily twice the size in each dimension of the table on my N4400. The other factor is that Felder-branded gear is built quite a bit more strongly than the Hammer line, which is after all their hobbyist / small shop line.

Felder has 2 lines for their bandSaw, FB510/610/710 are Felders own bandsaw, they are good saw for professional hobbyist.
the FB640/740/840/940, are made by Italian band saw maker ACM. true industrial machine, Felder buy them and put their own sticker on. the price is almost double of Felder's own band saw. you buy one of these you will never look at any other band saw ever again.

I’ve seen a current price for the Felder N4400 with ceramic guides of about $6k incl. delivery. Looking at the Carbatec website, while it’s currently out of stock, the Laguna 18BX is about $4k… is there really a $2k difference in quality?

I don't know about the N4400 but for about $6500 you could get an SCM S440P (that was the price at the end of last year) which is a step up from the Felder X10 Series (510, 610 etc). If your budget stretches that far it's worth looking into, they have a much higher blade speed than the hammer or felder models and the Italians just make great bandsaws
