help needed resawing King Billy
Hi all,
I have 2 king Billy planks about 15' long x 10" x 1.5". I need to bring them down to 3/4 inch but, realy do not want to waste so much beutiful timber by taking it down with a thicknesser. I figure, if I resaw, I should be able to get 1 3/4" plank and 1 1/2" plank from each. Problem is I spent all of my money on Huon so, cannot afford a larger bandsaw at the moment.
Is their anybody in the eastern suburbs (I am in Surrey Hills) who has a saw that they could let me use (I would pay for the use). I know they have one at the Box Hill woodworkers co-op but, it is stuck in a corner so, access is limited to small pieces.
thanks
Warren

Well I am not in the eastern suburbs so I didnt reply earlier. I am out werribee way. I have a 21 inch bandsaw with a 1" tungsten carbide blade. It would do the job. You would likely lose a bit more stock than your figures suggest as the stock will likely need a pass or 2 through the thicknesser after being resawn and allow a bit for the thickness of the blade (about 2mm). You mention wanting to pay as well as being short of money. Possibly some of the king billy on the thinner side could be donated to my timber collection? just a thought, let me know if I can help out.

Thanks Doug,
I had put aside this weekend to measure up what I nned for the centreboard case - I have 2 pieces, one around 8" wide and the other 9" The material for the centre board case needs to be 3/4 Inch and I have no need at all for 1/2 inch king billy stock unless it is long enough for the sheerplanks (which it isn't) so, once I have pulled out the 2 pieces I have and decided which one to use, and cleaned up both sides and one edge with the thicknesser and buzzer, I will get back in touch. You can have the leftover piece - hopefully it will finish to 1/2 inch but, even 3/8ths would be good for some applications or, you could make vaneer out of it.
Thanks again for the offer - please PM your contact number
cheers

bit of a problem
Doug
I ran each board through the thicknesser and discovered that both boards had surface checks all along one side. By the time I got below the cracks each board was less than an inch thick so, I ended up with two clean boards 3/4" and two whole bags of saw dust.
I bought these boards from AFT and the guy there was concerned about the quality as they had been in stock since the 70s so, they sold them to me quite cheaply.... Ya gets what you pay for! At least they were honest about them which can be rare these days.
Oh, and every bit that can come loose and fall off my el-cheapo GMC thicknesser has.....
time to tool up!
Sorry doug, it is really nice timber with quite a bit of figure but, cracks in a centre board case will send a boat to the bottom.....
Thanks for your kind offer

Well at least you finished up with something you could use and it sounds like a lot of sawdust/shavings. I had a use for 3/8th or 1/2 inch boards too! never mind, good luck with the rest of the project.

Checks all along one side??? You sure it was king billy. I have a fair stock myself and not a check on any of it. Yours must have been stored very poorly where ever you bought it from. I hope you paid a lot less than the current going rate of $48.00/ lineal metre of 6"x 1" sawn board!!!
If you never made a mistake, you never made anything!

Definitely King Billy and, yes, It was stored very poorly. I don't know when AFT moved but, I imagine they don't get much in the way of requests for it so, it was lying on the ground under some racks, payed about 1/4 of what I pay for Huon ($24.00 a superfoot - Don't work with metric) so, yes, it was cheap.
The guys were very honest about it and didn't like my chances of getting much out of it but, what I have left after planing is beautiful and will make a good centreboard case and possibly a thwart or two. Bloody doctor has told me not to go near my table saw for a couple of weeks due to new medication so, can't do anything with it at the moment (boat building has stalled for a few weeks - just as the weather is getting good too)
cheers
