Hobby Bandsaw
Hi, wondering what type of band saw is good for working with huon pine. Want to get the boyfriend something for Christmas.
Looking for something to store in garage and under $400. Somewhere in Melbourne would be ideal.

Very nice thought and kind of you
Could you give us a bit of an indication as to what he would be looking to make with the bandsaw? Or, perhaps even better to ask, what does he wish to make in general, and what tools/equipment does he have now?
This might help us target something appropriate and useful

Perhaps, the brains trust needs to clarify the difference between a "tool like" bandsaw and one suitable for hobby use.
Without seeing it in the flesh, I'm guessing that something like this https://www.carbatec.com.au/machiner...-length-1785mm will be better than anything available through Bunnings.
But it might need bolting to a substantial stand to dampen vibration.regards from Alberta, Canada

It would be a lovely surprise, but ... I think you will need to spend considerably more than $400 for a suitable bandsaw.
Perhaps establish a "shed fund" for him which he can use to purchase tools -- my wife did something similar one Christmas and it was really useful as over a couple of Christmases and birthdays (plus a few dollars from myself) I was able to buy some really good tools.regards from Alberta, Canada

I think a 14" (350mm) bandsaw is really the minimum that is any use. The problem with smaller wheels is that they bend the bandsaw blade too much and quickly induce metal fatigue and the blades just keep breaking. If you keep an eye on Gumtree and Ebay you might get a 14" bandsaw for $400.

Thanks everyone, some really good responses. The shed find sounds like a great idea.
