    Default Metabo BAS 318 bandsaw

Hello, I've been researching bandsaws and I'm close to making a decision on buying a Metabo BAS 318. I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with using this bandsaw. My usage will be spasmodic and will mainly be used for making children toys and other homeware. I did consider the smaller Metabo 260 but the cutting height of 100m was a bit off putting. Also, I believe the 260 is made in China whereas the 318 is made in Germany. The BAS 318 has a cutting height of 170mm and has a more powerful induction motor which I think is more useful. Any comments would be appreciated . Thank you

I bought a Metabo 318. It was my first bandsaw. I got it home, read the manual, ensured it was setup with correct tension etc and ventured into my first cut. BANG!!! The blade broke and in the process destroyed the safety cut-out switch mounted in the top right hand corner of the top door. Bought a new blade, disconnected the buggered cut-out switch. Fired up for a second cut...BANG!! Another broken blade. No damage this time. Put another new blade in. Fired it up...BANG!! You guessed it, another broken blade. So, i got the manual out and it suggested checking that bottom guide rollers be checked. I opened the bottom door. Hmm! What bottom roller guide? There wasn't any. I rang Metabo in Melb and they said i possible and that it wouldn't leave the factory incomplete. Suggested i go back to the retailer (I bought it off the shop floor as a display). Rang them but they had gone bust. So I rang Metabo again and after much discussion they eventually sent me the missing guide rollers. So, if you buy this bandsaw check that it's complete.
i eventually sold it because i found it to lightweight for the majority ogf the work i was doing at the time. Got a lovely Laguna now. 😁👍

Hello Shedhand. Thank you for your input. I'm proposing to purchase a brand new bandsaw rather than an 'off the floor' job. I did view and try a shop floor machine and it seemed to work OK. However, I will also look at the Laguna options.
    Thank you. BBench

Hello, I note from your previous posts in 2012 that your comments relate to an earlier Metabo - being a BAS 317. I would hope that the current model would have some serious improvements to the model you referred to. Cheers BBench

Yep, you're right mate. In my head, 10 years is a loooong time ago. Details escape me. 😬👴🏼
