Thread: plastic blade protectors

I thought most of the Fun of owning a Bandsaw was being sliced too near death while playing with Blade when it’s of the machine,

I actually just use a Phillips screwdriver but I keep meaning to make a tool a bit like a tiny long-handled axe, you pull the “axe” through the open side of the protector so that it forces it open wider than the tooth set and simultaneously press it down over the blade. Just need a round tuit…

I don't bother with any sort of protector, not even on the 1" TPI 50mm wide Bandsaw Mill blades. Folding those up is "fun" but a pair of leather riggers gloves and canvas duckweave overalls help.

You're overthinking it. It really isn't necessary.

Well you learn something every day, never seen one before and after 50 years of using Bandsaws without such an item I won't be seeking any suppliers

Besides ... I am trying to protect the teeth, not my useless ancient hide.

What amazes me is the ‘experts’ who man teaching ‘centres of excellence’ can’t fold bandsaw blades.

The young ex Parnham house lecturer at Canberra School O Farts wood course.
I guess the Poms had an underling or minion to do it for them.

The ‘ex time served Shipright’ who was Technical Officer at ACU TAS course here in Sydney.
I should have taught my daughter who was a student there how to do it to shame the sexist pig.
I only found out after she’d finished and I did a fill in stint whilst he took long service leave.

I learned as an apprentice on a 36” bandsaw.
it was the first years job to maintain the machinery, worst job soaking and scraping the glue off 30” disc sander.
Its an easily learned skill, with 14” school toys just a downward flick the blade, left right twist and it’s done.
The big ones are easier with a wooden floor or on a rubber mat to catch the teeth and stop it sliding away from you. The second set of folds is where the big ones get interesting.

I’ve never seen these blade protectors in 60 years of using bandsaws, like blade detensioning

25mm blades will always come uncoiled with the teeth pointing upwards.
WHY?
This is always painful.

I reckon more injury would come from attempting to insert a protector like that on a bandsaw blade than just figure 8 folding it as Henry suggests and hanging it up in a safe place.
