Thread: Removing bandsaw wheels

If you are removing the top wheel,its probably a bit of rust between bearing and shaft. Use a soft faced hammer and some wood as a lever.If not sure or confident seek assistance .Cast iron and sometimes aluminium will break before it bends.

The bottom wheel is probably on a keyway on the pulley shaft.You may need to make - buy -rent -borrow- a puller for it. Once again don't bullock it - get help from someone experinced in disassembling machinery.

You should be able to get a cheap three-legged puller from SuperCheap Auto
or similar. I think less than $20.00 is the go. Get some penetrating oil and liberaly apply it to the hub. A week of this won't hurt if the wheel is really frozen on there.

Set up the puller on the wheel and tension it up. Give the bolt on the puller a sharp rap with a hammer-that often frees up the hub. If this doesn't work (and it probably won't)., your next move will be to again tension the puller, then apply heat to the hub of the wheel. The idea here is that the wheel will expand faster/more than the shaft, and it will then free itself from the binding.

As your wheel is probably cast alloy, due care must obviously be taken.
