Roller Bearing Guides - Newbie Question
Does any one know of a replacement for the blade guides that come with a chinese/taiwanese 14 inch generic type bandsaw. I've just purchased this saw second hand and it hasn't been looked after too well even though it appears to be new. The current guides are held in with two self tappers and just don't work. The bearings appear to be positioned so that they "cook" rather than roll (ie the blade runs across the flat face of the bearings rather than the bearing edge run on the blade). The saw is a Sher MJ343B but it has a few "cousins" here at Total Tools and Hare & Forbes. The blade guides on these superseding models seem to have been improved (ie the bearings roll as the blade passes) but unfortunately they are not immediatley interchangeable with my model unless I modify them somewhat. Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bodgy,
Read your post last night about your intention to bid on this saw. I was a bit reluctant to contact you. I thought that you may think I poached your saw but I found it on Ebay myself, not through this forum. (honest) But about the saw:
The saw has had very little use. But the use that it has had is abuse. Honestly, the guy that owned it didn't have a clue. He said he bought the floor stock so that he didn't have to assemble anything but I don't think he even checked any of the adjustments once he got it home. Looks like he just switched it on and let it pull itself to bits. Somehow he managed to crack the die cast roller bearing upper housing, cook all the bearings plus burn out the original motor (replaced under warranty) Looks like something got jambed somewhere that it shouldn't. I've completely pulled the thing to bits and have not found one bolt that had been tightened correctly. Its not a bad saw though. Once I tightened everything up everything seems to function correctly. The blade guides are still a mystery to me though. I've made up a makeshift part to replace the cracked and bent original but I'm not real happy with the original design. I'm really looking for some advise on where to get a better guide set that will fit this model.
But, to answer your question. I think I did you a favour buying this saw. I've had to do a lot of work to get it to behave and I'm still not done yet. If I had my time again I would still buy a second hand saw but one through the normal classified ads, something that I could have a look at and test prior to committing to the purchase.
I hope you find the saw you're after!

Comrade
I think you may have done me a favour, and saved me hours of driving across Sydney. I was attracted to the saw cause of the larger motor, but from what you say the guy was grossly incompetent and you get to pick up the pieces.
I'm going for a new Sherwood 14" from Timbecon for $399. Only 3/4 HP tho, but same throat etc and capacity. I'll just cut slower I spose.
Good luck with the bearingsBodgy

Parts
I am parting out an import 14" It is 25 years old. It has 2 knobs that hold the doors on and they are just like my 14" Delta. I can send you the guid brushes and berrings etc and housing if you want to pay the shipping which can not be much. They still will be the low end. They fit my Delta but I have Carter guides on that saw. If any one else needs parts they are yours for the shipping. No other fees.

I fitted a pair of roller guides the same as in Sprog's post to a chinese/taiwanese 14 inch generic type bandsaw. I had to drill and tap a couple of holes but they went on ok.
In contrast to your bandsaw i bought mine SH for $90 and it had been loving cared for by the previous owner. Those were the droids I was looking for.

The thread is 2 years old, I suspect the problem may have been sorted by now.
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Have a look at my thread called Bandsaw Refit. I had exactly the same issue with my new bandsaw. The guide assembly both top and bottom were totally useless, I ended up rebuilding them to suit some new guides purchased at Timbecon. The pictures are here on the thread
