Silver brazing rod supplier in Perth (to repair band saw blade)
After an hour on the 'phone and also visits to several shops (Reece Plumbing, Tradelink, Bunnings, Repco, auto shops, etc, etc) I have yet to find a supplier of 50% silver (approx.) brazing rods.
15% silver is the maximum I have found but I believe a 50% silver content is required for the steel band saw blade strength to be maintained when I join it.
Any suggestions of where I can buy a couple of 50% silver brazing rods ?
Has anyone used a 15% silver content rod to join a broken band saw blade successfully (that is: it hasn't broken quickly) ?

Harry, those places are a waste of time, go to a welding supply shop, BOC or similar, tell them what you're wanting to do and they'll supply you the right rod and flux, 1.6 mm is the size I use. I can't remember the exact mix of the rod, I've gone through several now repairing blades. When you go to join the blades, trim the edges square, with snips or grind, the blade then needs to be scarfed, that is ground back like a chamfer, approx 3-4 times the thickness of the blade. To do this, I set the blade with the teeth on the same side with about 4 mm overhang. Grind or linish to get the scarf. Set it up in your jig, and put some flux in between the joints, which should be set up so that there is no raised area on the joint. I use a Mapro torch on the blades and find it works well, heat the blade on the joint area, holding the silver solder on the joint, when the temp is right the solder should flow, you'd only need about 2-3 mm of the solder. Once the joint is fixed, it will need to be ground back, I use a block of wood with a radius of approx 200 mm and just grind/linish ACROSS the weld joint, not along as it will fail. Going along the joint puts in minute scratches, which will turn into a crack and break the blade. Once the joint has been flushed on both sides, I heat the blade to a light blue to stress relieve the blade, so that it won't fatigue and break.
Hope this helps
