    Got a question though...

How do I wire it? yes it is 3 phase.

The easiest way to wire it, is to ...................................CALL A SPARKY.
240 V is reasonably easy. 3 phase is DEADLY, unless you know what you're doing, it's not as simple as connecting the 4 wires. Having found that a factory that I once rented, had 3 phase wiring already in, but was wired all over the place. Ended up having the BIL (Qualified Sparkie) undo all the plugs and checking them. What woke me up that something was wrong, was a machine would run in one direction in one socket yet run opposite on another!!

Green goes to green. The other three wires connect to the three terminals on the bottom of the switch. If the motor runs backwards reverse two of the three wires.

Thanks Kryn! I used to call in the sparky for this for my other 3 phase machines. I will just check with my existing 3 phase wiring and do the same... I have plenty 3 phase cable rated for 7.5kw+, this motor is under 3kw and very close to the power source, I think I am all good.

    Default 3 Phaze.

Did the welder work backwards also.
Personally single phase is more of a problem especially in household wiring where the neutral and active have been reversed.
This can result in stuff remaining live even though turned off.
I have one 415 PP wired backwards deliberately in the 'shop as some machines are similar and it's easier to swap PPs than swap wires especially in the old black plugs where the spring clips have a habit of launching into the darkest corner of the 'shop.

Connect up a VFD to it, then you can plug into 240V and have a variable speed bandsaw

The bandsaw weighs about 200kg. can feel it was much heavier than the SCM S400P.

    Good score on the saw.

    Dust extraction tip.

Make yourself a new throat plate and insert the plate in so thea slot behind the blade.

Or don't use the insert at all when you are not creating small offcuts. , I've been doing this a lot recently and there is a marked improvement in extraction efficiency.

If you got it closer to a school nearer Te Puke, it means its properly packed with illegal contraband thats why it'll be heavier.

    good score on the bandsaw

I followed the instructions on a few youtube clips to setup the bandsaw, connected the bandsaw over the weekend, (a good 3 phase plug cost $100NZD each!!!!!!!) and switched on...

no surprises, the saw blade was still good and machine cuts beautifully.

Nice to be helpful but I worry about this advice.
    Dear reader.
    Call an electrician.
For your information only. Note that 3 phase power has 1 earth lead and 3 phase leads. The colour coding of wiring changed over the years so take extreme care. A modern earth lead is green and yellow. Be very, very certain, which wire you are connecting this to. Your life depends on it. Other people's lives depend on it. Call an electrician.

The other 3 phase wires cycle through 360 degrees of AC current. This matters for an induction motor.

There are sets of coils in the motor. They will be a factor of 3. So let's suppose there are 6 coils.
Phase one on coil 1 we'll call 0 degrees.
Phase two goes to coil 2 and is at 120 degrees AC from the first phase.
Phase three goes to coil 3 and is at 240 degrees AC from the first phase.
Phase one goes to coil 4 = 0
Phase two goes to coil 5 = 120
Phase three goes to coil 6 = 240

The 120 degrees between phases causes the electro-magnetic field wave to rotate around the stator. The rotor turns to try and keep itself aligned with this moving field. Round and round it goes always trying to keep up with this rotating field.

So you see that it does matter which terminal you connect each phase to for an induction motor. They need to be in a particular order.
    Call an electrician.

    Ouch!

Did that include socket price? I often see 3-phase plugs listed on Trademe at ~$25-$40 but I usually only buy at the bottom end of that range. What amperage do you use? I sold a 20amp 3-phase PDL socket on Trademe last month for just $13 .

I've only one 3-phase outlet in my workshop at present (will have another fitted by the end of the year). I have each machine (2 so far, 2 more awaiting) wired the same way, so that they all turn the correct direction from the socket.

If the initial direction of rotation is wrong it's just a matter of swapping two of the three, phase wires over, at the plug (not at the peckhead - which is where DaveVman's concerns are applicable. However, if you don't know this then you probably do need to call a sparkie.

When the second socket is installed I'll be making sure the phases are the same way around !!!

    Cheers, Vann.
