Didn't get much done this weekend unfortunately, been cleaning for a rent inspection. I did have a lot of time to think about the guide bearings though. Was at Bunnings today anyway so I picked up an appropriately sized L bracket in 4mm steel, cut it in half and then trimmed each piece to size. Going to use a 8mm x 22mm bearing in the top position and then a couple of 6mm x 19mm bearings below to replace the brass pins it currently has. Will secure all of them with washers and bolts, seems to work for a number of the aftermarket solutions. Not going to look pretty but I'm really just doing it as a proof of concept, if it works then I'll work on something that is a bit more lightweight and uses less bolts.

    Got lots done this weekend!

Got everything down to bare metal with the exception of the wheels (still waiting on bearing pullers to be delivered) and have started polishing up the parts that aren't going to be painted. Worked on the bearings and shaft for a fair while and they actually came up really nicely, almost mirror finish on them once I cut through all the years of dirt. So now I just need to prime and paint and then work on replacing the bearings in the wheel. All the tools and replacement parts should be coming this week though so will hopefully make some good progress next weekend.

    Pics coming soon!

Urethane tyres arrived today so I went and picked up the rest of the supplies for the retread. Got both insertion strip rubber and neoprene rubber from Clark Rubber in 4.5mm thickness, will trim it to width and then use it to fill the channel on the wheel. Should sit about 1.5mm proud which will hopefully crown the urethane tyre once I slip it over the top.

Quick preview pic of the guide bearing assembly now that I've got the paint off too. Only half done cleaning the bearing but its cleaned up really well.

Figured I'd post the pics of the body all stripped down to bare metal! Have posted a thread asking for some advice on painting below, if you think you can help I'd love to hear your opinions.

Man Australia Post are killing me with these bearing pullers. 11 days and they only arrived at the Welshpool depot this morning. Really hope they arrive tomorrow so I can get some stuff done on the weekend.

Pullers arrived this morning and the blind bearing puller is about 2mm too big to fit in the hole

Gahhhh so frustrating, I have no idea what to do now. Probably just going to have to cut one of them out with a dremel so I can get in and knock the one behind it out. Feel like this is kind of overkill though and I really don't want to damage anything.

Success! I hate not using the right tools (years as a photocopier tech taught me not to force ) but a 1mm pin punch angled in between the bearings and a small hammer got the job done. Starting to wish I had tried that two weeks ago!

Original bearings from the wheel are as follows.

    SKF 6201Z (Made in Germany)
    Inner Diameter: 12mm
    Outer Diameter: 32mm
    Race 10mm

Going to pick up the replacements late this arvo or tomorrow morning and then I have all the replacement parts I need!

Shiny! Kind of tempted to leave the adjustment knobs raw but they're pretty scarred up so I think painting them is the way to go.

Bought primer and paint yesterday, going to try and see if my old housemate will let me use the shed to paint as it's empty and would keep me out of the rain. Hoping to get the wheels painted tomorrow at the very least so that next weekend the paint will be nicely set up for tyre install.

The other bearing pullers I got are great. Took me five minutes to get the drive pulley off the donor machine, didn't give myself a fat lip this time either! Took a while to arrive but worth it in the end, got 4" and 8" pullers for $44 delivered which was less than Supercheap wanted for a 3".

Still no paint down but I'm getting really close, underestimated how long it would take me to get through all the masking of small parts. Also noticed some grooves on the inside of the case where the blade had come off, patched it with some metal bog this afternoon and I'll sand it up tomorrow.

Got the new bearings and circlip installed in the wheel too, runs really smoothly now!

Dang. Started looking at the motor off the donor machine and it looks like the pulley was broken at some point and epoxied back together. Obviously considering the lengths I've gone to so far with this machine I want to replace it but I'm not having much luck.

I'm totally ignorant about this stuff but I've taken some measurements and it looks like the inner diameter is 1/2". The diameter of the outside of the pulley is 2" 3/8 and the diameter of the belt groove is 1" 7/16. I know it uses 1a belts but searching around online isn't turning up anything useful. Lots of 1/2" inner diameter pulleys but nothing to match the other dimensions.

Suggestions? Even if someone could point me in the direction of companies that might sell these, I would imagine they'd be a fairly commonplace part for lots of machines.

That pulley is a Stenco brand pulley, very common and Australian made. Just Google 'stenco pulley' and you will find heaps of hits. Blackwoods in Perth have them, suppliers of power transmission equipment, any bearing supplier would stock them, and good hardware stores or someone like Gasweld. I'm sure you will have no problem locating one, and the 1/2" bore will probably be a standard off the shelf item.
Out of interest, the '2' and '1A' refer to the PCD (pitch circle diameter) which is basically a nominal size referring to where the belt sits in the groove and 'A' refers to the width across the top of the belt, among other dimensions.
Good luck with the restoration, looks like you have been a good customer of the masking tape shop!

That pulley can be repaired fix it together with a high grade epoxy then drill the join in a couple of places and insert a couple of studs as it happens
I am just doing the exact repair on a brand new pulley that I dropped

Yeah honestly the repair feels relatively solid and I'm sure it would run for years without issue but I don't anticipate it being too expensive so I'll just replace it. Would just bug me considering the amount of work I've put into the rest of the machine.
