I was just looking at the Varta Ni-MH cells and the AA and AA capacities are fine but the C and D cells are really poor, the D must just be a C Cell in a bigger case as they have the same capacity, a good D cell is up to triple that capacity.
I was always given loads of Yuasa batteries that were deemed not good enough to be on a mine site, most worked fine and I had a stockpile of orange AA batteries for years but I don't think I have seen anything but Yuasa car batteries since then.

Yes even dry cells leak on rare occasions when their seals have broken and they are "over-discharged" causing hydrogen gas which ruptures the seal. Normal batteries discharges quickly, alkaline a bit slower. NiCad discharges as well, but usually stops at about 1.1V, but they do go down much further when they're old or cooked which results in leaking, if they were quite badly made. The LSD (low self discharge) batteries should be good for a very long time. I have not had a LSD leaking yet.
When you're using rechargeables, don't use AC, you don't need it. If you have 2 sets of batteries, when one set is flat, put in another set. I have a tradesman digital radio that I use in the shed. I only use an AC adapter. I don't switch off at the wall, only at the radio and I keep all my stations.
