I don't need much but I'd pitch in if it helps... not that I want to corner anyone into an unwieldy group buy but I am after a few bits.

I'm sure you've tried everyone Dsel but I'm surprised bohler-udderholm don't offer something. I thought they supplied all the exotic Swedish steels? Maybe they only deal with big clients.

That may be the way to go, Johnny. But if anything turns up here in Oz, I'd happily pop some in the post for you.

Some of the swedish mobs supply in large sheet rather than 2", 3" wide rolls etc. Which would be to costly and difficult to ship or would need to be cut down prior to shipping which is a bit hard to arrange. Also I have been going through some locals who can make calls direct as most of the companies I emailed didn't even respond.

I can't say I have tried everyone, but I have tried everyone I have been tipped off to or could find on google! Happy to hear of any leads! Bohler-Udderholm Australia don't list as having 1095 Spring Steel but i can check if I have contacted them and shoot off another email.

I have a TGIAG plate. I bought it on another forum. Shipped it to my shipito account. Stuck it in a box with some other stuff and sent it here.

There is no reason why you couldnt buy from TGIAG or other suppliers and send it through a shipping intermediary.

    Blue-Tempered Steel Shim Stock

On the other hand if it's 20 thou 1095 bright polished 3" wide I have some that I could mail to you, 20 thou is a bit on the thin side for a tenon saw, although I have made 14" x 2" sash tenons before with 20 thou plate, and they very nice to use, but I don't know how well they would stand up to rough handling... for robustness most would prefer 25 thou?

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi All,
Maybe I'm off the mark, could not you buy a Handsaw from the local Sunday/Flea Market, & gently cut to the size you want. Hardest part wood be Drilling the Holes.

Hi DSEL74, I would be interested in getting some saw plate if you are placing an order, some 0.015" 0.020" and some 0.025" if possible, Cheers Richie Rich

For example to get it in from the UK it works out around $9-10 AUD per lineal foot inclusive of delivery.
SPRING STEEL CS95 HARDENED TEMPERED POLISHED SHEARED EDGES IN 50 FOOT COIL
    3" X 0.020"
    2" X 0.015"

**That is based on the online exchange rates it probably be more when the banks add their margin to the exchange, might be lucky and be less but I would be surprised.

Add $10 if you want your local saw Dr to punch the teeth, or just file your own, compared to TGIAG

    TGIAG SAW PLATES

We also offer a range of "pre-toothed" saw plates. These saw plates have been "de-blued", and have teeth punched into them according to the customer's designation. Saw plates can be supplied with any TPI from 4 to 16 PPI, in Rip or Crosscut.

As with all of the saw plates we sell these have their teeth punched (not sharpened) and are shipped cleaned, with a coat of oil and un-buffed. After sanding (with sand paper from 300 to 1500 grit) these saw plates will shine like a mirror.

    Description Size Pricing
    Dovetail saw (small -light) 2" x 12" x 0.015" thk $20.00
    Dovetail saw (medium) 3" x 12" x 0.020" thk $20.00

⅜ to 1½" wide be a pretty narrow saw. Do they have anything wider?

Issatree, old saws can certainly be a source of saw plate, but you take pot luck with the condition of it, and the thickness. Part of the joy of rolling your own is getting a nice, thin dovetail or small carcase saw, for which 20 thou (0.5mm) is a good choice. Many of the saws you are likely to stumble on will be about 25 thou plate - ok for larger teeth, but you get very chunky things if you tooth that to 14 tpi.

Drilling is actually quite easy, as long as you use the right bits...

    Cheers,
    IW

For those who may be put off by blank saw plate, toothing is really a lot easier than you may think. I too was afraid I would make a complete mess, & got my first couple of blades toothed by machine, but once I got the courage to start from scratch, I was amazed at how easy it is. If you are toothing your own, you have to add file costs to the equation, of course. Toothing a small saw pretty much kills one corner of a file, so the added cost on a small blade is approximately 1/3rd of a file, i.e. anywhere from around 3 to 4 bucks extra, depending on where & when you buy your files...

    Cheers,
    IW

What about using replacement floor scraper blades available from Bunning Tool Dept the material has been used before by members for making Tenon saw blades.
If you check back over the last couple of years on articals on saw making there is a write up about the use of this material for saw blanks as well as a material to make cabinet scrapers.
    Cheers
