    Default new Makore dt

Hi all. The expectant influx of newly made backsaws looks a bit bleak at the moment so I would forward some photo's of a new dt I am working on. The handle wood this time is Makore. It still needs to be waxed and buffed after allowing 3 to 4 days for the shellac to harden. Length of saw plate is 12 inches, and it will be sharpened 17tpi rip. Still got plenty of work to do on the hardback.

    Another one Stewie,
Now come on what are we doing with the brass.
Every thing else is looking your usual fantastic nice beautiful .
Now if that was me ,that brass would get an awful lot of filling and polishing .
On a note on polishing ,I've discovered 3000 wet and dry used with brasso as the lubricant, then just brasso as a final polish works quite well.

Still plenty to do with the brassback Matt. Will be repeating the bevel edges seen on the previous dt.

Looks really good. Have you refined that handle design a bit since the last one? It looks even better to me, or maybe it is just growing on me more & more

Thanks Ray. I reshaped the heel of the saw plate this morning so it flows much nicer from the shaping of the bottom cheek.

Thanks Dale. The 1st time I used this new handle shape I picked up some small area's that needed further refinement. I am pleased with the way it looks now. I plan to make this my stock handle shape on all future backsaws.

It has very pleasing lines to the eye if it feels as good as it looks, I think you are on a winner!

    Default Micromesh

    Hi Stewie,

Another beauty, congratulations. Sword style filing or will you surprise us?

Have you ever tried this: MICRO MESH SANDING SHEETS INTRODUCTORY WOOD KIT - Amazon.com

Expensive but produces an amazing finish - washable too.

    Cheers,

Thanks Rob. No I haven't used the Micro Mesh products. I use the Bear Tex pads. There quite similar. Wont be any surprises. The back will be filed sword style.

Hi all. The high temperatures during the week made it difficult to spend much time in the workshop but finally finished off this latest backsaw build. The colours within the Makore wood come up very nicely. Hope you like what you see. I have included some end grain shots so you can get a better idea to the amount of work that goes into preparing the handle for the shellac finish. That also goes with the shaping of the bevels on the brass hardback. It takes a lot of time to do this by hand and I sometimes curse the extra effort required, but it does add that extra flair to the final look of the saw.

    Stewie;
