How do I straighten this out?
I was looking at my favourite tenon saw (maker unknown, although the handle does have a Spear & Jackson medallion) when I noticed that the plate is looking like the proverbial dog's hind leg. The photos will show you how bad it is.
How should I go about straightening it? ISTR that sometimes it can be done by tapping on the back spine, and that in other events it needs removal of the spine, tensioning of the back or toothline or both of the sawplate and then replacement of the spine.
I've also included a picture of the spine so those who know these things can see what kind it is.Cheers

Hi Jeremy,
It needs to be re-tensioned. Look here: Tensioning a backsaw plate
From the look of it you would benefit by removing the back from the blade and cleaning it thoroughly so you tensioning effort goes easier.

Thanks Rob.
I gave it a quick go this morning following your instructions and it went well - I did need to increase the depth of the handle mortice afterwards, but that was not a problem.
I'll post a photo this evening showing the nice straight plate..Cheers

Jeremy,
You can also raise the back up by clamping the plate in a vise and then using a slit piece of hardwood to lever the back up on both ends. Replace the plate back assembly in the saw and snug down the screws. Clamp the plate at one end in the vise and carefully tap it down. You will need to swap the saw end for end several times but eventually you'll get the plate straight and the back in the correct position. Or you can just deepen the mortise a bit.
