Default Back in action (pun intended)!

    I'm back!

I haven't been able to do any woodworking at all for a month because I've had a bad back. The physiotherapy has worked and today, for the first time, I felt fit enough to do a bit of woodworking.

Bloody marvellous! Nothing too flash - just a bit of carpentry. I'm converting a crappy rolled steel internal doorframe into something that looks a bit more elegant by giving it a wooden overcoat. Thanks to some good advice from journeyman Mick the job has half a chance of working out well. Thanks Mick!

But just the sheer pleasure of being able to get back into woodwork! I've been champing at the bit for weeks but unable to do anything. Now I'll be able to continue with converting those old jarrah roof timbers into a table. For those of you who have missed this enthralling saga, have a look here

There'll be more photos in a few days time.

I hope that has cleared up any misunderstanding?

    Col,

Sorry to hear about the back. Perhaps you should retreat a little from the Dark Side into The Light; give away the hand planing for a time and use a thicknesser or drum sander. They could do wonders for your back

    Oz,

I suspect that what was once hard is now just difficult.

    Cheers,

    Good on you mate!

Hope the back stays in shape! You must have had withdrawal symptoms from not being able to make 'dust

    Cheers!

Col, you have my deepest sympathy.

i hurt my back when i ws in the army and every now and then i aggravate the injury, usually at work, not in the workshop, but when it happens, fortunately i know how to stretch it out and rest it and am usually back in action in 2 or 3 days. last time it happened was when i was edging a sloping driveway just over a week ago and i was supposed to be demoing at our local Triton club meeting that night. needless to say with a back that was too bad to work in the workshop at home i wasnt going to cart the triton into town and make a fool of myself in front of the whole club, so now im up for the demo next month

    Col,

Sorry to hear about your back but very pleased to hear that it's on the mend and that you fit and well enough to take up tool, so to speak.

I must confess that I was wondering what was happening with the "Diary of a Woodworking Nobody"

At least you've been able to keep up your contributions to The Rip.

    Cheers

Back problems are incredibly incapacitating. I seriously hurt my back in a sailing accident years ago. All the doctors and specialists were absolutely useless. Bed rest and valium! After 3 months, out of desperation, I tried a chiropracter. I thought these 'para-medicals' were witch doctors, similar to astrologists and aroma therapists.

Wrong, after the first vist I was mobile again, second visit - fixed.

May have been a specific injury (displaced disc) that chiropracters just luck onto fixing, but if I had put my predujice aside earlier, I would have been spared 3 months of agony>discomfort and a substantial loss of income.
    Absolute, unqualified recommendation

Thanks for the good wishes, gents!

Rocker - good try but you didn't convince, mate. It wasn't Dark Side techniques that caused the problem in the first place and I reckon the exercise involved in pushing hand tools is likely to do me more good in the recovery phase than would burning electrons. Besides, my mate Obi Wan C'Hohen would be put out if I didn't use some of the collection that I have amassed under his benign direction.

Craig - you're right, I've just about been able to keep up contributions to the RITFOTU but only just. For two weeks, I couldn't even sit down at the computer for more than about five minutes at a time.

Doug - like you I have this recurring problem from time to time. Usually I can fix it relatively quickly but this time I managed to exacerbate it through sheer stupidity and I've suffered a bit more of a problem as a consequence.

This isn't really a whinge. My bad back is only a bit of temporary discomfort and inconvenience. I'd hate to be really crook for an extended period of time.

Thanks again for your good wishes.
