    Shane --- Mate,

Has it occurred to you there is a common denominator in all these problems?

Take this advice from someone who has owned 2 , yes TWO, Rovers (should have learned my lesson first time around!) and a friend with a Daimler Sovereign. The Daimler was bought new, bits broke and fell off throughout its' life, same with the Rovers'.

Worst part of both brands is that the electrics always break down etc.
I can go on, but I haven't got the gift of the gab like you have.

    Buy the Landcruiser

Buying a Pommie car is the equivalent of buying an orange thicknesser from, no I won't use the T word again, don't want to upset you

I would concur with that, everyone I know who has had the pommy crap always complain that there is always at least one electric that won't function.
If you want to display real bad taste theres the Porche Cayenne, or if you have a casual $160+K laying around go for a BMW X5 M series.
The Landcruiser is a nice beast, big, comfortable, has everything you want on board and unlike the pommy counterpart, a good resale value, and they don't stop for no reason.
The Landrover is a great off road vehicle, it spends most of it's time off the road being bloody well fixed.....again again and again.

Sooo I guess a landrover is out then eh? What about a Range Rover? Theres one of them in pretty good nick down the road a bit for a fair sort of price...

Why not a Nissan? other than Ive heard theyre thirsty buggars Ive heard little negative about them..

mmmm maybe I bedder stick with a Landcruiser eh? ...so what to look for in a new to me one about 5 to 7 years old (think about the budget ol fellas the budget!)... I was looking the other night on Carpoint and although I can get a reasonable one here for about 27000 I seem to see more and better over east... so Im thinking maybe a flight over an overnighter go try a couple out (with a suitably mechanically minded forumite in tow!!) get the best and drive back?

Range Rover=Landrover with a flash body, few more appointments that are equally unreliable.
Landcruiser, full time 4x4, superb handling, bit thirsty though and rotate tyres often as the front scrub out because of full time 4, I get 24 litres per 100km, diesel is better and the new turbo goes like shyte out a shanghai, they tow well, I tow about 3 tonnes on a regular basis and no dramas, but they weigh 2.25 tonnes unladen.
Can't comment on the Nissan (Patrol) except it is not full time 4, but don't touch the 3 litre turbo, they have had some major problems.

I agree with Iain. Forget anything British - not that I've got anything against the Pommies but they don't make reliable cars.

What style of vehicle do you want? By the sounds of it you're after a big, comfortable, wagon style 4wd suitable for towing, which usually means Landcruiser, Patrol or Pajero. Perhaps even a Prado.

Have you considered a ute, maybe a dual cab or extra cab/space cab? They have the ability to carry stuff you wouldn't want to put on the carpet in the back of a posh wagon. Now that there are V6 and diesel options in all three, the Hilux, Navara and Triton are all quite capable as well as comfortable, even luxurious in the deluxe versions.

Then of course there's the Troopie if you want tough without the style.

Im still considering a ute... but I want some "style" along with comfort this time the bonus of 4x4 but mostly comfort... Ive had the troopie and as you say tuff without style its a shame they dont make them with a bit of it

    Anyways thanks for the info!!

Speaking of style, has anyone seen that bloody abomination, the Ssanyong Stavic, what a weird looking contraption, looks like the designers and the engineering department couldn't agree and neither would give in and neither won.
Looks like a cross between and sedan/hatch/wagon/ute/bus
Or you could go the Musso ute, another embarrasment to be seen in

    Cheers Iain
    Presently the choices are:

    1) Landcruiser
    2) Nissan Navara
    3) Nissan Pathfinder

    or

    4) A Ford ute... not sure possibly an XR6 maybe something along that line?

    5) A car? Im thinking a fairylane or a stumpsman... neither of which really turn me on from a toss a log in the back and cart it home from the bush point of view

so gotta do some teaser drivin an see whats turns me on! take em for a hoot out to the woodstack in the bush an see how they handle the track and then the load... could be interesting eh!!
