Would best for larger scale models tho.

    Hi Ben,

At work we have one just like that, but with different DRO and power feed.
It is the basic "8x30" style Taiwanese mill, simple and solid, and quite well made but don't expect beautiful fits or no backlash in the feeds.
One shortcoming is the limited spindle nose to table dimension, but this can be improved if one is prepared to make a riser block. Changing belt speeds is a pain, but at least the transmission is simple.

    Cheers,
    Bill

Mars of Brisbane manufactured a lathe range named Hercules, so possibly a Mars.

    Hi,

I passed up a Deckel FP2 last month for $1000.00! I could of got into a bidding fight but was worried about the size and weight of it. An FP1 would be a hell of a lot easier to move around. I'm tempted to have a look at this one but it is expensive and the missus would kill me if I bought (and I probably would!).

    Ben.

I paid a lot more than that for mine, but then again mine had no paint on it. Despite your deal-of-the-century Vernier, , that price on the Deckel is cheap.

    Hi,

In a couple of the photo's you can see there's only a single vee belt on the pulleys when it looks like there should be two? Any Deckel owners know if this is normal, or maybe a modification due to the single phase conversion?

    Ben

I think its a Mk I from the 1930's after looking intently at lathes.com.uk site?

I'd say a mod Ben, Looks like the 2 motor speeds the 3 phase motor would have had has been reproduced by 2 different sized motor pulleys.

Some thoughts on the two belt thing: the original motor is a 2 hp Siemens, old school, two speed. The Deckel is a gear-driven machine, so at the lower rpm ranges the gears act as a torque multiplier, hence the need for two belts. Need might be too strong a word.

In days gone by belt makers would sell matched pairs or triplets of vee belts for high h.p. applications. Good luck getting anything like that these days. If I was going to modernise a Deckel I would make a pair of poly-vee pulleys to fit a serpentine belt as sold in 10mm increments. A 25mm wide flat belt will cheerfully transmit over 5 h.p..

The Deckel in question looks good. If I didn't have one almost restored already I would be on that like a hindu on a chicken. The dividing head and slotter make for a great do-all small mill, rigid and powerful. The universal table is a delightful thing, and it alows the user to easily perform odd work without wasting a day making jigs or fixtures.

The tee slots are 12 mm...there are plenty of clamping kits in that size, and Germ Bay has goodies galore to keep you poor.

On looking again at the photos, the pulleys are original, so its just a matter of adding a second belt. The way I have bought matched belts in the past for a large compressor was to go to the bearing supply store when they weren't busy, ask for their belt sizing tool and a dozen belts of the nominal size. I spent 5 minutes finding the two most closely matched, job done.

What is missing though is a handwheel to go outboard of the pulleys. This was provided by Deckel so the user could rock the gear train to allow crunchless gear selection. My FP2 is missing that wheel too. Either turn one from alloy or get a wood turner to make you a spiffy wood one. Maybe from a Linden tree to keep the German goodness intact?
