No Bob, I am not real game to ring the seller up, he may not be too happy with me, even though I never really put him out..
But I do not really have the use for such a tool (the height gauge)...Phil has a 600mm version he got from Bosch...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

That LeBlond is a monster, and is on risers too. Makes mine look tiny....
an someone explain this? A Douglas(?) started at $100 and is now over $700 with 4 days to go. Looks like 2 bidders going at it. Can they see something i can't?

Hi Ewan, well there is something I can't see, and that's a vise... just someone getting carried away with bidding, although it's a nicely photographed and presented machine, makes all the difference when you are trying to sell something.
Here's one that I think will be interesting to watch, and see what it brings.. ABARBOGA MASKINER pedestal drill, Auction (0032-3002996) | GraysOnline Australia Gray's innovative spelling of Arboga not withstanding..

Well that just keeps those who have a Douglas or 2 investments pure.I never have been a wheeler dealer but always try to buy the best that my pocket allows.Victoria has a limited supply of Douglas shapers.Tafe and tech schools usually used Invicta, Elliott or Varnamo.
Both my Douglas came from Nsw and was worth the travel to pick them up.
I have been offered much more than I paid for them due to their ''cute factor'' seems to intrigue the people who have never seen them work before.
2 bidders both low volume purchasers will battle it out.I too love to see egos run rampant at auctions. John.

No nothing wrong with 3 phase at all, except that the typical person buying a shaper such as this probably won't have it. So they'll no doubt toss out the perfectly good motor and jam a single phase one in there, at a cost of over a hundred bucks, probably after having hired a trailer or similar to go collect the thing in the first place, then pat themselves on the back about how brilliant they are because "Don't ya know what these things cost when they were new!"
Maybe I'm just being unkind

Hey! Hold on Pete,
I've got an array of perfectly good 3 phase motors on a shelf in the garden shelf. Wouldn't be there if I'd had some foresight when I had the single phase supply moved at the front of the house 18 years ago. Back then it was about 600 bucks to have 3 phase brought up to the meter box. Ah well, we all xxxx up now and again.
And I've got a bitty Douglas I hire trailered home.

eBay (and other auctions) Metalwork Stuff
Hi
I am after a shaper and the Douglas seems to be the one to go for as it is small and has a good name etc.
I have watched ebay and other places and they don't come up too often. Another was posted 2 weeks ago and withdrawn( the guy decided to keep it)
This one is less than an hour away from home, looks clean and has handles etc. helpful seller, able to load etc. so other than fuel it costs no more. I have a phase converter so can run it ok. I also have a spare vice.
There is one on gumtree in Surfers for $600 and does not have handles and is filthy by accounts. Freight $$$. Can not see it first etc. would be more than $720 once home.
A recent post discussed price of Douglas and $180 to over $1000 was mentioned according to some they would not pay more than $300 etc but then they had one or more already.
So does any one have a Douglas for sale? And if you do would you now want to sell for less than what this one gets?
I am not one of the bidders battling it out but watching closely and while I would prefer to pay a lot less I can understand the total cost is still reasonable.
I bet the seller got it at auction for a lot less. I have bought from graysonline and their terms etc can make it hard for private buyers to buy some items.
Regards
James

Oh THAT was low Bob. You're never going to let me live that one down are you!
James in my experience a machine is worth what it's worth to each individual. I've never understood people buying things based on what they used to be worth when new, buy them, brag about what a "bargain" they got, and then shove it in the back of their shed or in their backyard to slowly rust away. Yet that logic seems to be presented with monotonous regularity. If the machine is worth a grand to you or whatever, because you have a good use for it, then go for it. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to buy a brand new Hercus 260 lathe. I paid double what I could have bought a used one for. Yet I don't regret it for a moment. In my experience the pain of the cost of purchase is soon forgotten, yet the purchase is there "forever" ... or at least as long as you keep it.
With regard that shaper, I don't agree they don't come up often. Maybe not convenient to you, but they come up quite regularly. That particular one is 3 phase and doesn't have a shaper vice. How much that affects the individual buyer is going to depend on them, but I wouldn't put this at the "bargain" end of the range.
Ray the ""Ababoga" finished up going for $760. I wonder what it would have made had it been correctly listed.
Pete
