Well that was funny for so many reasons.
I hope the sellers helpful adviser is going to chip in the extra $151. lol Though I guess there is no way of knowing who it is.
Q: gearhead is quite rare. No doubt it will go over $2k. You should thank to the Stupid and greedy first bidder.
The winner is lucky the seller is a nice guy also..

Still pretty cheap for the most sophisticated 260 Hercus made.
I paid close to 2 large for my one owner '69 ARL. Came accompanied by a few of the harder to obtain accessories, the transposing gear set and high speed pulleys along with the steadies, mic saddle stop and boxed Burnerd light pattern 4 jaw. Back when I bought the lathe I was happy with the price.
If that 260G was here, I would have hit the buy it now button when it first appeared in my saved searches. If it was metric, the button would have been hit even quicker.
BT
ps. I should add that I have no illusions regarding the status these South Australian lathes have amongst forum members. To some they are junk, to others, a dream realised.

Yes, but the first bidder bid $900 and then no more. It wasn't the same person who finished up buying the machine. Not everyone has untold time to hover over ebay, it's quite likely the first person thought they'd throw out a $900 bid and see what happens, some time later, once the BIN option was cancelled, the serious buyers saw the listing and began bidding on it.
As Bob said, it's still a good price for that particular lathe model. Whether they're worth as much as some are willing to pay for them is another story entirely, but that's the market.

Hi BT,
I said "more than the first bidder thought was *worth paying*" not "*worth*" for that very reason. What you choose to pay is completely up to you as it is for the first bidder. I'm making no judgment at all on what the lathe is "worth"*. I dont even know where it is. For all I know the first bidder was just trying to pick it up for $900 and relist it after a coat of paint. 96% of his history are single bids.
Stuart
*If askeed I'd likely agree it was cheapish but as I have no clue how big a 260 is, or for that matter much else about it other than it's color that would hardly be an informed decision.

Same. It wasn't camlock, IIRC. So comparable in work envelope with the current range of small Chinese geared head machines. 25mm spindle bore?
Might be better than new Chinese, might not - all depends on the amount of wear at that point. No way of knowing from a few pix. Hopefully it'll work out well for the purchaser.

Stu,
All I was saying was that in my mind it was cheap. Whilst I said I would buy it in a flash if it was over here, well that's not entirely true. There is no way that I'd buy a substantial lathe on Ebay without inspection. Narrows my opportunities real quick.
My brother in law bought a Hercus Craftsman, the precursor to the 260, and in my mind, the most attractive of the Hercus lathes. It was cheap, priced to sell. A total of 12 teeth were missing from the back gear assembly.
I'm pretty sure a 260G sold a few years back on Ebay for around 3ish grand. That lathe was well photographed. Unlike the potential surprise just auctioned.

Anyone recognise this lathe? Looks decent, and priced to... not sell. The seller has helpfully posted 5 photos exactly the same.

Call me old-fashioned, but I reckon if you want eight grand for a lathe you need to know its name.
