    Default Avacado

I planted an avacado tree 8-9 years ago, from seed.
All the advice was that I was wasting my time (Melbourne, so climate, and they don't grow fertille trees from seed ).
I was going to pull it out this year.
    But have a look at this.Avacado 001.JPGAvacado 002.JPGAvacado 003.JPGAvacado 004.JPGAvacado 005.JPG
I'm pretty sure these are flowers. Maybe someone can confirm it for me.
If so, does this mean it is fertile?
Maybe I'll be eating my own Avocadoes.
    Ripper.

Pretty sure sawdust maker is on the money (my folks have a couple of trees in their yard) look into it bUT I believe the male should be planted down wind of the female.....they're in Warburton, so climate should be fine where you are.

Disclaimer - I have killed most plants in my yard, so I'm not much of a green thumb

Apparently, the flower opens as female on the first day, and male on the second.
I'm not sure if that is in all varieties. (I've been googling it this morn, so I am becoming an 'expert' (a modern day expert, you don't actually know anything, you just cut and paste other 'experts' knowledge).
I do have a second tree, but it is a bit of a failure. It is still only about 15" tall after about 5 years, so the old brown thumb has worked on that one.
We'll see what happens. One things for sure, if you need a second tree, I'm not waiting another 7 or 8 years, it's coming out. (I've only got a small block, so space is a premium.)
It's certainly earned itself another year or 2.
    Thanks for the replies.

Our first avocado grew out of our first compost heap, after a few years we were picking fruit averaging a lb each in weight, I've since grown over a hundred trees from this plant and other fruit from friends or the super market. We live in Nth Est Vic.
Now This was the only tree within cooee of our property. Some years ago I discovered that our avocado had both female and male flowers, one sex came out in the morning the other in the afternoon but there was an overlap hence fruit.
The nice thing about cool climate avocados is that the fruit will hang on the tree for over 12 months, and because it remains green it doesn't attract pests at least not at our place. The fruit ripen after being picked.
After I charge the battery on my camera I'll post a photo of some seedlings
I do the same with our macadamias.

I have kept it trimmed to about 2m+.
I heard that they don't like the wind. It is in a corner, so is protected, and I don't want it too tall, so I lop the top off every couple of years.
I don't think that does it any harm (I hope not, anyway).

Hope you enjoy your ava's, and yes the hot dry nor westerlies give them curry. Makes them drop their flowers. People up our way plant ava's on the leeward side of a fruit tree, probably only a metre and a half away as protection against the hot winds.

    Exclamation

I guess this means you do not need two plants.

The plant world's equivalent of an hermaphrodite, perhaps. Means you can have fun with yourself!!
