    Default Garden Update

    I am not really a gardener in the true sense, but I like gardens and I enjoy those aspects that to my limited experience are unusual. A few things have happened in the last few days so here goes not really in any order of importance.

    We have this monstrous Jade bush. I think it would measure about five meters in width. Actually, it is this size despite heavy and frequent pruning.

    The thickest stems are about 200mm:

    But in fifteen years it has never flowered until now

    The flowers are small but quite delicate:

    This is a Bougainvillea that has a vibrant flower and was on the way to some cactus:

    SWMBO has a phobia about cactus over running the garden so most are either in pots or in this case in a wheelbarrow:

    The honey bees were quite excited too:

    Wheelbarrows are something of a theme in the garden. This is an old one with a steel wheel under this lot:

    This barrow has winter type bulbs (bluebells) in it so not much happening now. I think it may be due for a coat of paint. Note the "Flintstone" wheel:

    Roses in this one. Looking a little sad for the moment, but probably about to pick up as we had the first rain (31mm) for two or three months at the beginning of this week:

    And it is the season for these fellows. This skin was a carpet snake, which I hope to catch a glimpse of at some point. The shriveled up skin measured 2.7m.

    Paul, that Jade bush Portulacaria is a long life growing plant that likes plenty of sunshine and you are correct, it seldom flowers. An interesting side note about this plant, it converts around 3-4 times of mammalian waste air into oxygen, compared to other plants.

    If we planted heaps of this African plant around the globe, we could be looking good.

    Thanks for that additional information.

    I didn't know the Jade bush's actual name. By the way, you can eat the leaves. They have a citrus taste which I quite like. I was once recommended to eat four a day, which truthfully means you can't exactly survive on them and I have fallen a long way behind on the quota.

    There are a few more wheelbarrows to go in the graveyard, but those projects are low down on the priorities.

    We have a fish pond in the backyard, which has some lilies growing in it. I think this may be their third year.

    This year the plants have grown under the foot bridge. The bridge and pond are just not in the same league as that of Monet , but all the flowers without exception have come out underneath the bridge.

    I read that the flowers last for three days, but ours only last for two days, opening in the morning and closing each night.
