    Default Puriri, my favourite trees...

We live in an area that was once part of a vast Puriri forest. Most have gone now but there are still many huge old trees about, here is one of my favourite girls at the local show grounds, an ugly old bitch but a survivor!

What age do they get to ? She looks like she's been around for some time.

I used to live on a Puriri Street. Sadly all the Puriri were cut down before we moved there.

The hardest timber I've ever machined, it also has an oily texture. I once made a set of kitchen benches with it and used Fibreglass resin to glue the joins, the resin didn't permeate and the joints just popped apart. Also the native Puriri moth larvae bores it's way through the entire trunk leaving holes and tunnels through the surface, Gorgeous colour though, a rich dark brown,. I may consider using it for my car wheels....

    Default Puriri for woodturning?

I picked up a piece of Puriri to possibly woodturn into something whilst on a visit to NZ some years back ,unfortunately it has split so I am thinking of slicing it for a decorative box inlay.
Has some good feature I reckon.

    Cheers

Can't find anything concrete but I think for hundreds of years at least, she certainly looks old doesn't she? There are much bigger more impressive trees just across the road from us at the primary school my kids go to and just up the road is some natural groves of obviously old trees. I'll try and gets a few more pics.

No worries it was clean of bark ,and inspected for infestation so no problems.
