    Default Screen

A while back in another thread I mentioned my vibrating screen that I use for sifting stuff, I have it setup to do some sifting and took some pics....

It's just a double bed wire mesh base supported at top and btm on springs that came from some other bed frames, the topside support is an old kids swing set and I made up the btm support frame recycled from something else, a washing machine motor with an added wieght provides the jiggle, some variation in speed would be advantageous for doing different sorts of materials, as it is it's a little too fast for big chunky stuff, the wire wound mesh can trap rocks in it and when the materail is damp it will fill up the mesh, a few wacks with the back of the shovel fixes that tho, there's room for a few mods but for quick rough it works all right

The last pic is a second pass thru of the first reject stuff, here the screen is set at a lower angle, I adjust the height by hooks and chain that hang from the swing.

I first of all made this up to screen the tip mulch as there's lots of bug chunks and general rubbish in that stuff, I now also use it to screen the rocks out of the garden bed soil, much easier to work when you aren't hitting rocks everytime.

Nice, I wish I'd thought of that 20 odd years ago when I was sifting soil for my rammed earth internal walls in our house. You learn something every day.

Yeh, I'm guessing you sifted it all manually, lot of hard work that, I made a rotating cylindrical one back home in Tas. for sifting the sand we used for under the plastic under the concrete slab, no piccies tho.

Thanks for sharing, Pete. It's not half as dero as the description 'bed base with washing machine motor attached to swing set' would have you believe .

I definitely need a similar device to make my veggie beds a bit more workable. What's come through the screen looks beautiful.

Anything smaller than about 6mm goes thru which does make for a nice result.

The previous owners brought in golf ball to fist size rocks to put under some concrete for bird averies so I'm told, anyway lots of rock in the ground and trying to dig was impossible, so plan was to improve the soil with lots mulch and compost and time (years) and let the worms do there thing, it did make it easier to dig the soil and the screen will now allow me to screen out the rocks, I hate the rocks!!! might also be that I'm a bit mad and need a hobby, mmm in another thread Cliff suggested woodworking.....
