    Default Hyco Saw

Just thought I would share my new addition to the stable. Hyco Tilting Arbor 10" Saw #362 followed me home from the Sunshine Coast Yesterday.

Even though it runs well the wiring is a bit scary.. A rewire is pending

Been chasing one of these for awhile so could believe my luck that one came up on the day I was heading that way with my trailer.
Missing the cast side tables but might look at adding a router table to the side to make it dual purpose.
    Even got an original Mitre

I know nothing about Hyco, but as you're probably aware I love olde switchgear.

Yup, that looks scary. You'll need to rewire it yourself, because the insulation around the heaters looks like it might be asbestos (so a sparkie may refuse to do it, or insist on condemning the switch). Take sensible precautions with the dust when you open it up - that's all.

Is the machine single or 3-phase? Those MEM Startex switches handle either.

    Cheers, Vann.

It’s single phase, Vann, I have put it into storage for a bit until I get my Woodfast lathe up and going. Will be interesting to see what’s in the box when I get to open it.

Default Another Hyco tilting arbor saw

I bought one of these at an Auction at the old Amaroo Park business area yesterday.
Its been in a leaky shed but everything moves ok except the Mitre slide is rusted in its groove.
The seller when he realised I was going to restore it gave me another from his stash.
Whereabouts is the serial number on these saws?
Paid all of $10 for it.
    Plus gst make that $11.

Cheer up. This side of the ditch it would have cost $11.50 (frggen GST ).

The serial number on mine was on the top of the front right hand corner basically under the fence in the 5th pic.
Looks like yours is missing the cast side tables as well.
Great buy .... should look a treat when you get it restored.

Thanks Gaza, mine is number 233.
Ive been squirting it with that rust releaser that Bunnies now stock and have got the original Mitre slide out of the slot.
The wind up and down handle in front looks dodgy but I have very vague memories of one a mate bought from the Garden Island closing auction in the 90s and it was peculiar also.
The tilt works ok even with that huge motor, same for the rise and fall so I’m hopeful.

I wonder how many they made? Was checking the McPherson's Catalogues that I have( not that I have every year) and these saws first appeared in the 1960 catalogue and in the 1966 catalogue Woodfast appeared. The 1955 catalogue has the smaller 8" saw but not the 12"... It would be good if anyone else has catalogues between these three years...we maybe able to determine how many years they were made.

I did look at that handle and wonder if it was an experiment gone wrong or some user made replacement.

The other thing that I can't find in the McPerson's Catalogues are the cast side tables. The 1960 Catalogue has a pic that has no side tables.... I wonder if these were an optional extra or a standard option at some point.
Maybe other owners could share numbers and whether they have side tables or not... we may get a clearer picture.

I’ve dug out my 60 and 66 cattledogs and here’s rough pics.
I have others elsewhere I’ll dig them out when I remember where I stashed them.
Also a Cleveland machinery listing, this has an MX phone number so 60s at latest.
I have included a pic of the 66 listing of the Barker tilting arbor sawbench as I have never seen or heard from anyone who has?
Love to find one as Barker quality would beat most, including the Sydney manufactured WadkinBursgreen AGS.
Looks like the Hyco probably didn’t come with side tables.
I can never understand why Woodfast never made a tilting arbor sawbench until they were on their last gasp in the 80s with their panelsaw.
They probably had only a big enough factory to keep up to the school/TAFE orders for lathes and bandsaws etc.

Thanks Clear Out....Stew's saw has cast side tables... maybe it was a retrofit from another source.
Yes I have those two McPherson's Catalogues as well.... would love to see a catalogue from the years in between if they are available... I saw a post on here that said there was a 1962 version but never seen one come up for sale.

    Gaza
my cast side tables have matched original paint underneath and they have the same cast quality and design as the main table. They are also consistent with the cast side tables I have on my smaller hyco tilting table saw.

    Photos will follow shortly.

    Cheers Stew

I have since found a few more images of saws with side tables...it’s funny that the McPhersons Catalogues don’t show them or even mention them as an option...Hyco may have sold them through a number of resellers and McPhersons May have chosen the option of no side tables to keep the price down....not sure what I will do on mine as I would imagine the castings wouldn’t be cheap and then to have them machined seems to be a specialised operation due to the size. The smaller one may be an option....been designing a table extension for the larger side that includes a router table and cabinet I will make it from timber to start with before investigating if a cast version is affordable...it would look really neat though.

    Hyco Saw Router Ext 2018.jpg
This is a rough idea of what I was thinking of building for the Router table extension for the Hyco Saw. The Draw layout may change when I decide what I want to store in them.
